Spinoff... sign language

Andrew's wifey had a post about sign language.

Does anyone have a good resource for teaching sign language to babies?  Anyone have any tips to share?  What age was your child when you started teaching sign language?

TIA

Re: Spinoff... sign language

  • I just googled it. We've been using some signs whenever we mention whatever it is, and supposedly he'll eventually catch on.

  • We want our baby to know all types of languages so I'm getting dvds from https://www.signingtime.com/ and your baby can read.

  • There are some really great resources out there... (I only know so many because my youngest is Deaf).

    Books:

    Baby's First Signs

    American Sign Language (ASL)

    Websites:

    ASLpro.com

    Lifeprint.com

Isign.com ( I believe this one is still active)

There are also ASL Dvd's and Signing Time with Alex and Leah that you can rent from the library.

Also there is a Baby Einstein video with Signing in it as well...My First Signs.

    Hope this helps!

  • From a quick google skim, it seems like babies seem to start picking this up around 10 months of age.

    Does that sound right?

ETA: Thanks for the tips.  I just checked Netflix, too.  They offer a couple of videos.  I will also check out lifeprint, and see if our library has the mentioned books.

  • Youtube has some really great videos on it that I have used. I started with Riley when she was about 9 or so months. It took some time but she is really good with it.

Yeah, I will be grateful when E can understand me, and can hopefully communicate without crying.

When's he's hungry, he usually cries like he's starving and will never eat again.  I hate when he cries like that.  I can't make the bottle fast enough for him.

  • This is one of the videos I have learned stuff from to teach to Riley. I also have Baby Signs, I can sign videos. They are really anoying but she has picked stuff up from them.
  • We started teaching Z sign language around 10 months when we noticed he's not picking up words.  He's 17 months and still not talking.  His therapist strongly encourages sign language.  She gives us hand out with all kinds of signs on it.  Z uses about half sign language and half signs that he made up.  We don't really care as long as he has a way to communicate with us.
