I get really frustrated when I go shopping and see that healthier options are more expensive. I'm not talking about produce (thank you farmer's market!) but for example, yogurt. I can spend $1.89 for a 4 pack of Dannon Light & Fit or I can spend $4.00 on 4 Greek yogurts. I like to buy English muffins to help curb my bagel habit and Thomas' Multigrain are $1.00 MORE than their regular ones!
It's really frustrating when trying to stick to a shopping budget AND try to eat healthier. Any tips you can share?
Re: Healthy foods & cost
I only buy the Greek yogurt when it's on sale and/or I have a coupon. I seem to always find coupons for it, since it's a newer product. I think I just printed some from coupons.com for one of the brands. If I can't get a good deal on it I buy the big container of plain low-fat or fat free yogurt... usually the store brand. You can strain it yourself w/ a fine mesh strainer and a piece of cheesecloth or paper towel. (that is essentially what greek yogurt is) and then add my own fruit and some honey to sweeten... much less sugar and calories that way.
And, I always buy store brand if possible. I just bought a package of Wegmans multigrain English muffins, and they were much cheaper than the Thomas'. I tend to not even look at the name brand stuff, unless I have a coupon which makes it cheaper than the generic.
It is frustrating but it makes sense- healthy foods are made with real ingredients while the not-so-healthy stuff is typically made with processed ingredients derived from corn.
I love Greek yogurt and usually buy the big container and then divide it up. Saves on money and on packaging. I agree with pp, store brands are a great way to save money. There isn't much I buy that isn't Wegmans' brand. Shopping in the bulk section can also save money. (ie- a can of almonds is around $6 while you can buy a pound for around $4)
I'm so glad you posted this! I have to check it out next trip to Wegs, I can't believe how much I pay for almonds. I also buy most things Wegmans brand and I'm really happy with their quality of generic.
Good tips from everyone else. I buy like 75% Wegmans brand now.
Also, if there is a brand you love (like Thomas' Multigrain) write them an email or send a letter raving how much you love the brand and would appreciate any coupons they could spare.
Unfortunately at this point I'm eating more!
Thanks for the tips ladies! I also buy Wegmans brand items the majority of the time, the yogurt and English muffins were 2 examples that came to my mind.
It is really frustrating! There are never coupons I use in the SUnday paper (except this past weekend, I think I cut out 5 a new record!) and the last time I downloaded one of the coupon programs it put a virus on my computer so DH is against me getting them from the internet (I'm probably going to try again soon though)
Oh and an FYI about Wegmans english muffins- they have HFCS in them (if that matters to you). I buy the Thomas' like once a month and keep them in the fridge so they last.
