Sedated ABR

How long was your LO under during their sedated ABR?  I'm starting to worry more about this as it gets closer.  Our ENT said it could be up to an hour based on what they see.  I'm ok with DS going under, it's the length of time he's under that's starting to worry me.   They suspect he may have a mild hearing loss and we're doing the ABR to either confirm or rule it out.

Re: Sedated ABR

  • My 2.5 yo DD has moderate unilateral hearing loss.  She had her ABR at 11 months.  It took a little over an hour.  They did not use an IV, she just drank some liquid.  She woke up just as they were finishing the ABR.  I know it is hard to have your LO sedated, but the ABR isn't too bad.  In fact, I think with newborns, they are able to do it while they are sleeping.  I was able to be in the room with her while they did the ABR.  I read a book while the audiologist did the test.

     Good luck!

  • My daughter has had 4 sedated ABRs and they have all taken about an hour.  The first two were with the "drink" that the pp speaks of the other two were under general anesthesia.  When I inquired about the change because she was still within the weight limits of the "drink" the anesthesiologist said he prefers general because they are more in control.  They can remove the GA instantly and begin the "recovery" if something were to go awry, with the "drink" they have to wait it out.

I'm ok with DS going under, it's the length of time he's under that's starting to worry me.  She has been under for adenoids and some major hip repair as well.  When I said this same thing when she was having a 6 hour surgery on her hips the anesthesiologist said it is just like an airplane, it is the take of and landing that is tricky the "flight time" is auto-pilot.

Going under sedation is always scarry, but these words from our docs have focused my fear.  I hope all goes well for you LO and you too ;-)
