If you had to rank the doctors at Women's Specialists??

I know that many of you have had experience with Women's Specialists and as I'm probably going to go with them I am wondering which doctor should I choose. I know I've heard positive things about many of them and it is hard to compare, but in your opinion, how would you rank the doctors? Who would be your 1st. 2nd. 3rd choice and who would be your last choice?

Re: If you had to rank the doctors at Women's Specialists??

  • I think that's almost impossible to do because you just see your doctor.  It's not a practice where you rotate through all the physicians
  • Loading the player...
  • Call and see who's taking new patients, that should greatly reduce your options.

  • I have only seen 3 of the doctors...

    1. Bobo - warm, friendly, funny and great with my hubby...that's REALLY important to me

    2. Ortique - only saw her once because Bobo had a family emergency.  She was quite sweet and thorough (stripped my membranes and did a check to try and kick-start labor).  I liked her and if I had ended up with a c-section I would have switched to her since she does VBACs

    3. Mott - she's pretty dry and business only if you ask me.  She did my check prior to being released from the hospital with #2.  Didn't dislike her, just wouldn't choose her.

  • Bobo is number 1 in my book!!!

I saw Dryden when Bobo couldn't see me once.  I really really liked her.  She was very sweet, thorough and reminded me a lot of Dr. Bobo.  If Bobo couldn't have performed my CSection, Dryden would've been the way to go.

On a business aspect, I've worked with Drs. Hilary Boswell, Michael Heard, and Edward Yosowitz.  They're good docs, too.  Between the three I just listed, Dr. Boswell is similar to that of Drs. Bobo and Dryden.

    Hope this helps some,

    Heather

  • Thanks for the feedback, those are the names that keep coming up. I've heard one negative thing about Zepeda (just that he isn't a fan of being able to birth big babies naturally) But I really prefer a female doctor anyways.

I am hoping to have a good idea before I call so I can go ahead and book an appointment. If I had a choice of 2 I wanted to know which one I should pick.

I'd really love to hear any input even if it is about just one doctor. But for those of you who have had experience with more then one it is interesting to hear how they compare.

  • I had a great experience with the midwives, and if you are looking to go natural I think they are your best bet.  And they are pretty much always taking new patients.  My son was delivered via c-section and I got super lucky that Dr. Dryden was on call at the time.  (I say lucky because I'm now her patient even though she wasn't taking new patients and she is one of the few who supports VBAC).   Aside from the VBAC issue, Dr. Dryden is generally fabulous.  Love her but I highly doubt she's taking new patients.

  • i love dr bobo.  she was fabulous the entire pregnancy.  only bummer is she wasn't able to be there for delivery -- ortique delivered me and she was great too; i went natural and she was totally supportive.  when i found out why bobo couldnt be there, it made me like her even more (a family thing); she also was texting dr. ortique every 20-30 minutes keeping an "eye" on me the entire time.  dd was born at 1119pm and both were in my room early the next morning checking in.

I see Dr Espana who is newer in the practice. He is amazing and I'm pretty sure he (along with the TCH neonatal team) saved my DD's life by making fast decisions about her birth. He did a great job of keeping me calm in the scariest situation I can imagine and has been great in follow ups as well.

Before my emergency c-section I saw the midwives and loved them as well. Because I'm now considered high risk, I cannot see them anymore but am happy to stay with Dr Espana.

I'm not sure if Dr Bobo is either.... I had a c-section with her due to size  and lack of progress. Granted, the recommendation I received (from both Dr Bobo AND my peri) was either an induction during the 39th week or a c-section at 40, and I opted for the section after we discussed my chances of an induction working. I had about a 20% chance of a successful induction given I was totally unfavorable for it with zero progress, so decided I preferred not to labor for two days then end up induced anyway! However, DD was 9 lbs 11 oz, and chunky chunky.

I loved Dr Bobo, though. She's cautious and conservative, but fantastic. I appreciated all the care she took.

Dr Dryden was my second choice if Dr Bobo hadn't been taking new patients.

  • Good to know. I delivered my first 2 by c-section, so I am not worried about ending up with a section just what happens right after the section. That is the main reason I am wanting to go with St Lukes so I can have that bonding time with my baby directly after a c-section.

I loved my Dr. in Beaumont, I was induced at 39w5d due to pregnancy induced hypertension and a slowly rising amount of protein in my urine. I was just under the bottom level for Pre-E so, we induced. I pushed for 3 hours and Lorrie kept crowning and going back in. She wouldn't progress any further and we changed gears and went for the c-section then. I trusted my Dr. and she waited for me to voice concerns before she offered a c-section. Afterward, a nurse told me she had never seen a doctor stay in the delivery room while pushing for as long as Dr. Sherman had. These are the reasons I opted to stay with her and not try for a v-bac with my second child.

Fortunately I had no health issues come up with Ellie so there is that part of me that wonders had I gone into labor on my own would it have been different and could I have delivered vaginally? That is the only reason I'd love to have a doctor open to v-bac. But I know it would be hard to find one as I've had 2 sections, and ultimately my healing process after the sections were not that bad, what I ultimately want more then anything is that bonding time with my baby right after giving birth no matter HOW my baby comes out. And ultimately, the emotional burden of my c-section with my first child and feeling like I had failed at delivery, really robbed me of hours of bonding time emotionally. For the first several hours with her, it was like I was caring for her, but it hadn't clicked that she was mine. I broke down about 24 hours after she was born crying a good hard cry of joy over my Lorrie, but it took a while to mourn the birth experience I had expected to have initially and to get over that. With Ellie, I had none of that as I knew what I was going in for. I would hate to go through that again, which is another reason I might not opt for a vbac even if I was allowed to try. But it would be SO nice to be with a doctor that would allow me to make that choice based on my condition at the time.

  • I love Dr. Zepeda. he is very sweet and supportive. he tried everything in the book to get my labor started without having to use pitocin. We had to use pitocin at the end, but it worked great.

He has lots of experience and he's seen everything under the sun. He is one of the founders of the women specialists. Many of the nurses at methodist Hospital told me that Dr. Zepeda is their OB/GYN. That's an excellent endorsement.

Dr. Heard is also great, but he only sees his patients until 12-weeks of pregnancy (at least that was the case with us) . Plus, he's no longer at the women specialists of Houston.

I don't know if any of the Drs would be open to a VBA2C, you'd have to ask, but Dr. Dryden is probably your best bet.

I can tell you I did not miss out on the initial bonding due to my section, I nursed my baby ON the operating table while I was being stitched up.  I was adamant that I not miss that immediate bonding time and the midwife came into the OR with us to facilitate breast feeding (I was really out of it and didn't have full use/control of my arms so she had to help me quite a bit but I was so glad she was there).  He stayed in my arms when we moved into recovery and aside from being passed around my family and occasionally checked by a nurse he stayed in my arms until we got settled in our room.  You have to make your wishes known (I had a doula who was a huge help in that respect) and advocate for yourself but if you're clear about what you want they will do everything they can to help you.

My OB/Gyn is Dr. Mott.  I chose her based on her experience with high risk patients, and experience with fibroids and pregnancy loss.  She is dry and all business...but that is what I needed at the time.  She referred me to Dr. Heard, who WAS in the same practice, to do my surgeries to correct some problems I had.  As far as I know, they do not have a replacement for him as far as REs go.

A year ago I had a lot of problem with her staff not calling back when I left messages.  I had to call Dr. Mott's office a few weeks ago and had MUCH better luck with them calling me back in a timely manner.  I think she has a new nurse.

If I had to choose an OB now, I would probably go with Dr. Bobo.
