Foley Ball

Has anyone heard, or had to have one of these used in their labor? I'm being induced on friday, but my doctor wants to use this first on thursday night because my cervix is not dilated at all. I am having contractions regularly, thankfully I don't feel them!! but cervix isn't moving at all.

please let me know what your experience was with it, did it hurt, did you have to have pitocin after, or did this start labor?

It's a foley bulb, not ball. LOL. It's basically a small balloon like thingy (technical term) that is placed in your cervix and inflated to help with dilation. I'm told it's uncomfortable. They'll use pitocin too.

I had this with ds as I had to be induced bc of hypertension. I was already almost 2 cm when they placed the foley bulb. The initial insertion did not hurt me but apparently that was surprising. What hurt was the cramping that occurred the next two hours. The foley came out about 3 hrs after they inserted it ... When you go to the bathroom you are supposed to gently tug and if it is ready to come out it will. If they are sending you home make sure you have a trash bag ready for this bc my dh had to get me one and he was totally freaked out. I was administered pitocin about 8 hrs later when I was told to go to the hospital for induction. The foley got me to 4+ cm but did not trigger strong enough contractions to continue without other meds. I hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know!

It will be my preferred method of augmentation once I show any progress and if my medical professionals feel the need to intervene.

And, yes, it's called a foley bulb.

Maybe my nurse was just a b!tch but she came every 5-10 minutes to tug on my foley bulb when I was induced with DS. She left me alone after she tugged on it and it came out. I puked on her from the pain. Needless to say, I will always opt for the repeat c-section as long as I know this is a possible option of being induced.

Wow....I am glad they inserted int he doctors office and let me go home for the night...that sounds miserable.

Pretty much. That was the worst part of labor. I had no problem taking the c-section after going through that.

DD was a week late so my midwife used one on me. She said it would take 30 minutes - several days to take effect. It took me 30 minutes...thankfully. It is a little akward b/c you have a rubber balloon up in your vag that inflates to about 4-5". However, if you're into "natural" ways of birthing, this is a good choice.

It totally worked for me. She put it in and told me and DH to walk around the courtyard some. By the time I got back 30 minutes later, I was in full labor.
