What am I going to do? Holy huge baby!

I just want to cry. Just got back fm our ultrasound. Let me start by saying he's healthy Thank the Lord! But he's huge! I'm not a bIg girl (5'4, 110 prepg, petite frame)..my hubby is 6'1 broad shouldered with a huge rib cage. The baby has taken after him. He's estimated to already be 8 lbs!!!! Now I have to get one more ultrasound two days before my induction to see if his measurements will even fit through my pelvic outlet. I dont want a csection. Have I mentioned I wanna cry? Sorry, I know I need to just deal with it and be happy to have a LO soon, but I just needed some support. Thanks for the vent session.

  • Don't stress! :) I really wouldn't base anything on what they said. Those growth ultrasounds can be off by up to 2 pounds.

  • One of my friends is a skinny mini, probably about your size, and her boys her 9 and 10 lbs. Her deliveries were fine! It's not all about the size of the baby. At my birthing class, the instructor kept saying that she's seen small babies give more trouble than big babies because of pelvic structure, positioning, etc. There are so many variables, not just just size. Chin up, you will be fine!

P.S.-  I was 8.5 lbs. at birth and my 2 brothers were over 11 and 12 lbs. My mom and I have the same build-- about 5'8", 130 lbs. (non-preggo) with no curves and narrow hips. I know I have a good chance of having a big baby, too, and my mom assures me it will be fine!

And if it turns out you need a C-section, that baby is going to be a nice, healthy baby either way. You'll be so happy to meet him, you won't be bothered with how he arrived.

  • I'd not completely believe u/s alone. My friend was allowed to go 10 days overdue because her baby measured "small" and got an almost 11lb girl who popped her tailbone.

  • I feel you...Tallen's not quite as big, but at 34 weeks 3 days he was estimated to be 6lb 8 oz. I have a regular OB appointment tomorrow so I am going to talk to her about it.

  • Ultrasound measurements are notoriously off, WAY off- that is why there is a big study going on now to try and update them.

I have a friend who is smaller than you that delivered an almost 10 lb baby naturally with minimal tearing (heck, I tore with my 7 lber).

  • Like the PP's have said the u/s can be off - here's hoping LO is smaller than expected!

  • Don't stress too much! The good thing is they know the situation with size, ultrasound weight estimates can be off - my ob said by 20% - and size doesn't necessarily mean difficult delivery.

That said, if you do choose or need a CS, it's not the end of the world! You'll survive, as so many of us have, and you'll get your baby out healthy. That's what matters. Good luck!

  • I agree with everyone else. You will be fine! Try not to stress too much about it (though I know I'd stress, too). Hopefully that ultrasound is off and your LO is more of a little one than you are expecting. :)

  • Try not to worry too much. I cannot recall a time when a friend who has expressed concern about a big baby and has been given a weight estimate has actually had a baby at that weight estimate.  Frequently the baby ends up at least a lb or more less than the estimate.

have your Dr. do a feel and tell you what he/she thinks.  Drs and u/s are off by about a pound either way.

    SURPRISE! Here comes #3!
  • Don't stress! Those u/s measurements can be off by as much as 2 pounds in either direction! If a vaginal birth is what you want, give it a shot no matter what. I have heard too many people who thought they were going to have huge babies come out (after an un-necessary c-section) with a 7 or 8 pound baby.

  • I'm in the same boat!  Yesterday (36w5d) LO was measuring about 7lbs 9ozs, and the head was measuring 40w2d!! The weight doesn't make as nervous as the head size does.  I'm going to try to not stress about it and just see what my body does.

Good luck to you and hopefully the measurements are off, or LO went through a big growth spurt and is going to slow down for a bit!

Like everybody's saying- they could be off... But also, fat babies are happy babies!!  They can eat more, so they can sleep longer.  And who doesn't like pudgy little arms & legs?

I'm hoping mines a chunker.  Odds are in my favor too, I was 10lb10oz.

  • I went in for a second opinion this morning at one of the university hospitals downtown because my OB was freaking out about my baby's size as well.  The MFM there told me that the ultrasound estimates get less and less accurate the bigger a baby gets.

Plus, babies really slow down their weight gain in the last couple weeks.  My 36w ultrasound estimated him at 8lb 4oz, and my 38w ultrasound this morning only had him up to 8lb 10oz, which I was really happy with.

Good luck to you, you can do it!

  • Thanks guys, for talking me through this. I, of all people, realize US can be inaccurate. I used to do ultrasounds. I also know that this tech has done US for many years, so she should be fairly good at msmts. I am hoping that this temporary machine that they have is just a little off on calibration. (The old machine they had got damaged in the tornado). I think that is what I'm counting on for hope right now. I know he will be bigger than DD was, I've measured ahead on fundal height for awhile. I've gained less weight this time though, even lost a pound fm last appointment. I am glad I'm not the only one in this boat. Misery does love company. Thanks again for the support. I'll continue working on an attitude adjustment and dig through my big girl panty pile to see if I can find some tha still fit ;) Its just taking some time for me to digest this.
