Parenting after a Loss

How do you child-proof window blind cords?

I had a nightmare last night about these that was really disturbing.  Is there a way to keep the cords out of reach w/o cutting them?  TIA

Re: How do you child-proof window blind cords?

  • If they aren't used a lot (up/down/up/down) I would gather them in a tight wad up at the top and put a zip tie around them.  If you do use them a lot I would replace them with the cordless ones.

They FREAK me out! My sister is an ER nurse and has seen 2 cases where a child accidentally hung themselves with the cords.  There are none in my house now!  Scary!

I know there are kits you can buy to keep the cords up. We don't have any in our house. After hearing of too many accidents from cords we switched to pull down shades.

Yep - it's called a cord keeper. We have them on all of our mini-blinds.  You wind the cord around the base and the clip the cover on top to keep it all in one place.

  • I put two nails into the wall up at the top of the blinds and wrapped the cord around those (kind of like you would with a vacuum cleaner cord).

By the time LO can reach that, she'll be in middle school and will hopefully know better.

We bought a little plastic hook thing from the depot that mounts on the wall up high, and we just wrap the cord around that.
