cat in the...crib

Any ideas on how to keep your cat out of the crib. We finally have the bedding on the crib and put a sheet over it, but my cat still likes to jump in and play. I shut the door now when I am not home but when i am in there he follows. Thought about getting a crib tent or netting. Any other suggestions?

Re: cat in the...crib

  • Before my DD got here we tried it all: We put tin foil in the crib and the pack in play. Worked prett well so that when she jumped on it, it scared her. You can also try balloons. Eventually though we just decided to keep the door to the nursery closed and we use a fan outside the door to keep the cat away from her door. GL!

  • I've heard tinfoil is great, my mum uses it for their cat, not for the crib but for everything else.

  • If tin foil in the crib doesn't work buy a poster board that fits in the crib and cover it with double sided or duct tape facing upwards.  Our cat used to try to get in the crib, but after we did that she has not jumped in once.  I even took it out for a day last week and she did not think about jumping in.

  • One of our cat's was jumping into the crib when it was first put together, and we just kept taking her out.  Finally, I put a rug on top of the bedding, and she hasn't gotten back in it.  The changing table however, is another story.  So, I covered that with plastic bags, and she just lays on top of them.  Unfortunately, tinfoil doesn't scare her, so that didn't work for us.  =0)

  • Well, I'll tell you before DS1 and 2 were both born the cat made beds in their cradle and loved to hang out in anything baby related and cozy.  In both cases, once the baby was home the cat wanted NOTHING to do w/ the baby or his stuff :D)
  • Our cat has jumped into the crib a total of two times since we set it up in April.  Both times, we made it quite clear (stern speech and blowing in his face) that it will not be tolerated.  Now he goes into the nursery, but would rather lay on the futon or curl up with me in the rocker.
  • Honestly we are keeping the nursery door shut at all times (when she isn't in there and when she is in there, it doesn't matter). I have one cat that loves to be in everything! I haven't given her the chance to jump in the crib, but I know she would in a heartbeat and I do not want her in the baby's room at all.

Ps. A spray bottle works quite well with keeping my cat off things (she literally runs at the sight of it, I don't even have to use it half the time!). However, you have to catch the kitty in the act for that to work.

  • I keep the doors to my bedroom and my nursery shut at all times. I figure since the cats have the whole house to roam around in, I want a cat-free zone ;)

Other than keeping the door shut, I don't know what else to suggest to you. The crib tent sounds like a good idea, though!

This is a good idea BUT I don't think duct tape would be a good idea stick to using masking tape or double sided tape so you don't hurt your cats feet.

  • Search on the term "crib tent" on sites like Amazon. I'm planning on getting one of these to keep my two very curious kitties out of the crib.

  • mine does the exact same thing. Part of me thinks it's adorable...and then logic kicks in. :-) We were going to go with the net option, but what we ended up doing was buying putting a sheet over the crib. The first time she tried jumping in she fell (thinking it was a solid surface) and hasn't been back.
  • I would just not let the cat in the nursery at all. Keep the door closed at all times, and if he does happen to follow you in while you're going in and out, sternly tell him no and shoo him out. Keeping a spray bottle near the door may help too, you can just give him a little squirt as soon as he sets foot into the room. Soon he'll learn that you don't want him in there.

This is what I am hoping for. The cats have not gone in the crib, but they have gone in the cradle. Hopefully once the baby comes they will not want to anymore.

  • My cats love the changing table probably because it is in front of the window and in the sun when the blackout shade is up. As for the crib though, I filled it with baby books (that just haven't been put away on the dresser shelf yet). They stopped jumping into the crib. And squirt bottles, ALWAYS a great thing to shoo kitties away from baby. Mine run too at the sight of it.
