I agree with with this quote and couldn't have said it better:

"They are cheapening the great idea of celebrating single moms on Father's Day by offering these products to mostly African-Americans. In this day and age, there are people from all walks of life that don't have fathers in the homes, and I think that they should reconsider their marketing strategies and just offer them to people of all colors."

Target had Father's Day cards for single moms that didn't have any obvious racial overtones*. I imagine a single mom might appreciate getting a little extra notice for all the hard work; CG great question about dads on Mother's Day...what a weird world we seem to live in these days...

I think they're a ridiculous marketing ploy (it's not like Mother's Day doesn't exist), but I don't know about them being racist.

If they make "white" cards as well AND mother's day cards for single fathers then I don't have a problem with it. If either of these cases isn't true then it's weird.

But, Hallmark seems to make a card for everything. They know some freak out there will buy it!

From the sound of it the Mahogany line itself was request by African american patrons of Hallmark & they said there were others available for sale as well. So no don't think this is racist...

I feel like it's creating something out of nothing. I am assuming that a writer for the mahogany line thought up this idea. Implemented it, and then it was attacked. I don't find it racist so much as an unfortunate occurrence.

I don't see where working hard comes into it. What I said is they're not fathers, they're mothers. So they should gets cards on Mother's day.

I work at Hallmark part time. They offer "white" ones in there everyday line for Father's Day. They also have ones for dad on Mother's Day.

Honestly, as a single mom who does EVERYTHING.... I loved hearing "Happy Father's Day" from a few of my friends and yes, I would love to have ben given a card.

The emotional toughness it takes to do this alone is something to respect. There has been no greater challenge in my life than being a sinlge mother. I have taken on BOTH roles (mother & father) and the thing about not having a parnter is there is nobody by your side to give you that pat on the back for stepping up to the plate. Having people recognize me on Father's Day is actually a heartwarming compliment. It lets me know that I am more than enough for my DD, which is a worry a lot of single parents have.

I understand your perspective. Single parenting is certainly no walk in the park.

I guess I don't see why they need a different brand for items for one skin color. By putting them in a separate category, it makes room for these problems. I would like to see them just integrate everything but make sure if a person/cartoon/race/ethnicity-specific theme is used, there are a variety of options.

Do black bumpies actually like that this is its own brand rather than just having the options (faster shopping)?? I mean, what about all the moms with tattoos or pink hair, where is their card?!

I know this is a late topic- but Hallmark does make regular cards for Father's Day for single moms. They have Mother's Day cards for fathers too. I have seen them both where I live.

Mahoogany is a line for African Americans- period. Just like there are cards in Spanish and other languages. I'm not sure if your referring more to the fact that Hallmark has a line for African Americans or that the card is referring to a single mom. What makes people feel racist more?

On the flip side- I can't tell you how "awesome" it is to spend my entire adult life only being able to buy the few cards that are made by Mahoogany if I don't want a photo of a Caucasion person on the cover of the cards I give to my parents, child and husband.

Having a specific card for single mothers on Father's Day has nothing to do with race. Having the Mahogany line is the same as having Christmas cards or Valentine's Day cards in Spanish or French. Since there are people in America that are different races and speak different languages, Hallmark is trying to (like another poster said) market to their demographic. In addition, "White" cards are the mainstream cards. Think about it... How often do you see a card with a Black person on it that isn't specifically marketed to Black people? We like to see people that look like us on the greeting cards that we give our family and friends. Or think about this... Have you (if you're not Black) received a card that had Black people on it? I agree with and give Mahogany cards and I think that it's a great idea. We are represented and can show our children that they aren't second class citizens because they're not a part of the racial majority.

I get what you are saying. I thought they did not offer father's day cards outside of the mahogany, hence my question. A hallmark rep has since set us straight.
