GBMC or University of MD hospital?

Need some advice from you Baltimore moms and moms-to-be. I am currently trying to decide between GBMC or University of MD medical center. I like that GBMC is such a highly rated maternity center but it is much further away from where I live (U of MD is much closer). I've met with OBs and midwives at both centers and am still having trouble deciding. Anyone deliver at one or the other and have a great experience? Bad experiences? Thanks![Poll]

Re: GBMC or University of MD hospital?

  • I gave birth at GBMC and had a wonderful experience.  The staff on site was great...very supportive and answered your questions.  If you like both hospitals the same, I say go with the one that is most convenient for you.

  • I'd say GBMC over U of MD. Although I've heard the best things about St. Joseph's, honestly.

  • I would choose based on OB.  I think I am going to deliver at gbmc when I get pregnant again.  I delivered at Carroll county and hated  the hospital experience.  But I LOVE my ob, and would use carroll again just to use him.  But I recently found out (by internet, and from ins company, so I still need confirmation from his office) that he also delivers at gbmc!
  • I have no experience with UofMD, so I cannot comment there.  But, I delivered at GBMC and was very happy with my experience.

I agree with the PP that said it may be better to decide based on finding an OB that you like.

All things being equal (ie OB has priveleges both places and you are happy with the tour from both) I'd go with whatever is closer to home.

  • I delivered at GBMC and it was a great experience.  Our delivery nurse was SUPERB.... there is not enough space to type all the wonderful things my husband and I could say about her.  The whole experience was great.  The staff was very attentive to both myself and my baby.  wonderful, wonderful.
  • I delivered at Uof MD on the recommendation of a drs. wife. I thought everyone was very nice. You will see a ton, ton of doctors and pediatricians because it is mostly interns, which could be good. I attempted a vbac with the midwives and ended up with a repeat c-section, I loved the midwives, the nurses were nice. The rooms are small - it's not fancy by any means, but I felt everyone was very helpful. Drs were helpful - I liked that you called one number - you didn't have to call a different number after hours, which was the other midwife group I was seeing. I switched to UofMD when I was 36 weeks pregnant and delivered at 39 weeks.

Plus I liked the fact the midwifes were "hands off" if you didn't want to get sonograms they were okay with you saying no - the other practice I was with wanted me to get weekly sonograms after 32 weeks, and UofMD midwives thought that was ridiculous.

ETA: they also have a great NICU and if you are breastfeeding, the lactation consultant is on of the best I have ever met.

  • I have no experience with either, but I will put in my two cents. My mom is a MW and says that they get nearly all of their transfers from GBMC or former GBMC patients. In the midwifery world at least, GBMC is known as one of the last natural birth-friendly hospitals in the area. I have had a few friends who were very unhappy with their experiences at GBMC and one who was talked into a c-section at 40w 3d for reasons that were never made clear to her even after the birth. If natural birth and/or avoiding a c-section is important to you, I might consider going elsewhere.

That being said, I do know one woman who delivered both her kids at GBMC and was happy with it. I am sure it partly depends on your OB, although you never know who you'll actually get when you go to deliver.

    GL with your decision!

  • I am an RN and I used to work in the newborn nursery at GBMC. Great staff, great reputation. The rooms are beautiful and welcoming, and the plus side - they still have a nursery in case you need a little bit of rest. A lot of mother-baby units require rooming in now.
