I am in a reformer pilates class and we are on our backs some of the time. I'm wondering if this is okay in the first and second trimesters? We use the jump boards and do a lot of arm and leg work on our backs as well. I haven't felt uncomfortable doing it but I keep reading that being on your back cuts off the oxygen to the baby.
I don't have my first dr. visit until Monday and I'll ask but I was just wondering if anyone has continued reformer pilates throughout pregnancy and what limitations you had.
Re: Reformer Pilates
I still use the reformer and do mat pilates now. I am 34 weeks. My doctor said I could do it as long as I felt comfortable. I had modified a few of the exercises but in general I can do almost everything I did pre-pregnancy.
Listen to your body though!
I did reformer Pilates my entire pregnancy. The class had anywhere from 3 to 7 people at a time. My teacher would tell everyone what exercise to do and then modify it for me if needed. I did fine with the back exercises; I stopped doing exercises where I was laying on my stomach when I started to show and I avoided the jump board. My last class was the day before my due date. I highly recommend doing it throughout your pregnancy if you can and like the PP said listen to your body. I will say all those pelvic tilts and circles came in handy during my delivery my doctor even commented on how strong my core was and that she thinks more women should do core strength training while pregnant if possible. Additionally, I was back in my jeans by 6 week PP and I thank Pilates for that.
