NBR: Recommend your vet

We have a 3 year old Maltese who is having some problems (2 hernias, fluid build-up around her stomach, low protein levels). I sent her with my mom so she could take her to our vet back home 2 1/2 hours away and she has been there for the past 3 weeks :( They have done multiple tests to see what could be causing the fluid build-up around her stomach and low protein levels. They're running one more test today and if it comes back negative, they're going to refer us out to a university. While I don't mind that, I was hoping to find a vet in ATL that could maybe see what's going on and even have an answer since ATL is a much bigger city than where I'm from. Thanks ladies!

Our vet has been the Hudson Bridge Animal Clinic in Stockbridge. Dr. Toole has been our vet for over 25 years. It's my understanding that he's selling his practice to Dr. Aycock (who's been his partner for over 15 years). They are absolutely wonderful and will treat you right. They housed our seriously ill cat at no charge for three days when we had to wait to get him in to see a specialist in Peachtree City.

They're right off the exit for Hudson Bridge on I-75.

And Intown, the East Atlanta Animal Clinic is tops. My girlfriend (who's a vet on the n'side of town) graduated from Vet Med school at UGA with all of the vets there. We took our dogs there for a while until we moved and they were wonderful with my spazzed-out, neurotic mutt.

  • Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Sandy Springs is who my vet sends pets to for advanced care.  They can be pricey, but they are good about giving you estimates.  We have used them for emergency care and for a canine dermatologist.  https://www.gvsvet.com/

My parents have sent a dog to UGA's vet school for ortho surgery and were very pleased.  Auburn has a great program as well.

  • I highly recommend Georgia Veterinary Specialists. They diagnosed a liver disorder in my dog after the vet couldn't figure out what was wrong. They have a lot of specialists like cardiology, internist, dermatology, etc. And while my dog was going through pre-surgery stuff, and recovery they were great about letting us visit, etc.

Ditto Georgia Veterinary Specialists for complicated issues.  Our cat received a transfusion there when she was really anemic and I have a friend who had one or two of her dogs treated for cancer there.

  • I am going to call GVS and see if they can and will take my little girl in and if not, I guess we'll get a referral to UGA. My mom just called to give me an update and her kidneys are normal, but her red blood count is low (22.7%). The vet said if it dropped down to 10% she'd need a blood transfusion. I swear this little dog has been more expensive than DS! She's worth it though!
