Another Godparent question

We are in a situation that we're not sure who to have as godparents.  We were both raised Lutheran and were baptized, communed, and comfirmed but neither of us go to church anymore.  Its very important to the family that we have a baptism.

I have a 1 brother and hubby has 1 brother. No sisters.  Both of us want our bro's as godfather and neither of us can think of a close relative for godmother.  Is it ok to have 2 Godfather's?  I had asked one of the ladies from my church and she said its happened before so my church accepts it but do you think it would be ok for 2 godfathers and no godmother?

Re: Another Godparent question

  • My son has 4 Godparents (long story). If they want at least one of each could you ask your mom?

  • I can't think of any reason why that wouldn't be ok.

  • So long as the church is ok with it, go for it!

  • As long as the church doesn't mind, I wouldn't think it's a problem at all.  My church prefers one of each sex (I'm Catholic), but I would think they'd be flexible if you couldn't think of anyone else....I think having 'good' godparents (prepared, responsible, etc) is more important than what sex they are.

  • If the church accepts it and those are the two people that are most special to you, I think you should use them. Great idea.
  • Go for it.

I even know a couple who only had one Godparent and that's it. I don't know about your church, but most here have no restrictions on Godparents (although I am also Catholic)

Are you guys planning on more kids? If so, why not choose one for now and one for another child?

  • I think 2 godfathers is fine if that's what you want to do.  I'm catholic and have 4 godparents (2 godfathers and 2 godmothers) so my family wasn't very traditional when choosing godparents in that they had to pick only 2.  I am also godmother to my cousin's daughter- and her husband's 2 brothers are the godfathers.  They are lutheran.  So my godaughter has me, plus 2 godfathers.  It's been done.
