DD has been sick for almost 2 wks now. She didn't have a fever the first week at all but was congested. She seemed to get better for a few days then last sat her temp went to 103.2. I rushed her to the dr and they said no ear infect just a cold. Her heart rate was 175 & they said that was due to her fever. They gave her motrin.
A few days later she was still running a temp & still very congested so i brought her to the dr yesterday. No ear infect, throat looks fine etc.
Get her home and both nostrils are bloody!!! My MIL was there and she's a nurse & she said it's prob due to irritation. We have been sticking the sucker up there alot so we are hoping that's what it is. I've got a call into the dr again.
Has this happened to anyone here?? Do you think it's irritation? I'm just so worried about her.
Re: 8 mos old with bloody nose
If it's just her nostrils that are bloody, it's probably irritation and dryness from sucking. Are you using saline spray with it? Our pedi said that we shouldn't use the sucker more than once or twice a day even with the saline (which is hard to do when they are sick, congsted, and can't breathe) to avoid drying out their nostrils and making it worse. And, only to use the sucker if you can see boogers (I don't think I've ever typed that word--yuck!). Too much sucking can damage the membranes.
Have you also tried a humidifer in her room and bringing her into the bathroom for steams?
OMG my MIL used it on her nose like 10x's in one day!!! Poor baby. I told her not to use it again at all today on her. I have the humidifier in her room but she won't sleep in there right now. She wakes up mult x's in an hr and goes right back but i'm assuming it's because she can't breath. I even have vick's in the little cup. She sleeps better with me which i hate to do but i want her & i to get some sleep!! lol
Poor little DD! Using the sucker that much can inflame the membranes in the nose, which can make the congestion worse, which may be why DD is taking longer to feel better. So good call on telling her not to use it anymore.
We let our LOs sleep with us when they were that age when they were sick (before they started to crawl) just so we all could get some sleep, so I totally undertstand. We also used Baby Vicks on their chests and necks under their PJs and sleep sacks (so they couldn't put their hands in it and and then their hands in their mouths). I read you shouldn't use regular Vicks, but Baby Vicks is fine if you can find it. If she will go down in the crib, you can try to elevate one end of it, although that might not do too much good at this age b/c they move around so much at night.
