when is a good time to start thinking about birthing classes. Like when should we start doing that?? I think the checklist on the bump says about 14 weeks. That just sounds so early....Idk though. Anyone else have a clue?
I think each area does something different. Our hospital has classes that start as soon as you get a BFP. We went to the Pre-Pregnancy-16 Weeks class when I was about 9 weeks. The next class is the 16 weeks - 36 weeks class, which we will go to when I am about 18 weeks. They have a Birthing class that lasts 4 weeks (once per week) that they suggest you don't attend until 6 months at the earliest. That one covers birthing options, labor & delivery, etc. The final class is Bringing Home Baby, which teaches about what to do once you bring the baby home. (Duh!)
We will attend all of them, since we are 1st timers. The first was great because we toured the hospital and were able to discuss symptoms and hear stories/experiences from other soon-to-be parents. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next.
We are planning to take Bradley courses and the series is 18 weeks. They start in either July or September but September pushes us right up to EDD so we will hopefully start in July.

Our hopsital wants to make sure you've signed up for them before you're even out of your first trimester because they fill up fast. I think they generally do the classes around 28-32 weeks depending on which ones you choose.
I was about 35 weeks when we went. It was an all day class so if you're going for that then I wouldn't reccommend waiting until you're that far along! It was a really uncomfortable day. But sign up early so you can get in a class at a time that suits you. They fill up quickly.
Sometimes I wonder who designs the checklists for The Bump and The Knot. I remember going through TK checklist and knowing some things were absolutely absurd to be doing so far in advance!
Check with your hospital, birthing center, etc. to see when they offer the classes. You may need to pre-register to ensure that you have an opening. We took our 4 week class in July and I was due in August. It was nice because it was fresh in our minds. Everyone in our class made it to the end, but the instructor did say that sometimes people deliver before the class is finished.
We signed up for our classes pretty early with our first (13 weeks I think) because it was well known that the classes at our hospital filled up quickly. I don't think we went until I was 25 weeks though and it was a 6 week course. Sounds crazy to me now!!!
It depends on the hospital you are going to. The hospital I am at, the classes fill up pretty fast, so they rec signing up around 20 weeks. I think I took my big birthing class about 32 weeks, and the breast feeding and childcare/cpr class about 34 weeks.

When I was pregnant with my DD we did the classes at the beginning of our third trimester. I would call your hospital and see what they suggest. My hospital had a schedule for it and told us when to register.

They filled up really quickly in our area so we didn't get in until I was almost 33 weeks. I feel like we waited too long!
