Music CD's and games for car trip?

We are doing a 10 hour drive this summer (one way), and other than some Nyquil I need suggestions.  We have Satellite Radio, but my DS doesn't seem to like it.  I'm looking for more classic type songs that he will know and want to sing with.

Also busy type of activitiy suggestions are welcomed.  He will just have turned 3 when we leave.  I'm planning to buy a portable DVD player so we can bring movies.

Any ideas?  I'm sorry in advance, I'm sure this question gets asked all the time.

    This.

    This.

    This.

I did a 12 hour trip by myself with a 2 and newly 4 yr old last summer.

I packed all these things like magna doodle, wrapped presents from the dollar store, lap desks so they could do crayons, library books, CD's, kids audio books, etc.

Turns out that the DVD player non-stop was the best bet.

Check out children's audio books from your library.  If you're able to be in the back with him to turn pages it would probably be even better.  I think I got 30 minutes out of audio books.

Magna doodle was a hit too.  For 10 minutes.

Wrapped presents from the dollar store (think silly putty) were a life saver because I'd whip those out to reward good behavior or to ward off an impending crank fest.

Snacks are imperative.  We basically broke all the rules with lots of movies and snacks in a bag since mine don't usually do those things at home.

I think he'll do better than you expect.  Both of mine did!

This year we did the trip in 1 day with non-stop movies and it was frankly very easy.

    GL!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I would suggest books on CD - DS LOVES listening to them. He prefers ones that are stories he already knows - we have the entire Dr. Seuss collection on CD, and that is his current favorite. He also really likes the Maurice Sendak collection, a general fairy tale one we have, the Polar Express, etc.

We do bring the iPad for long car trips, for him to watch movies, but often the CDs keep him occupied without it.

What else...we play "I Spy" a lot in the car, or games like "count how many red cars", etc.

    Oh, and 8 billion snacks.

  • I pack lots of things, but the ones that get the most time in the car are: books, DVD player, snacks, and coloring.  I have a travel craft bag of ColorWonders, crayons, stickers, memory cards, etc.  We have a book of finger play songs.  We have a travel lap tray, and bring along cars, trains, magnetic blocks, etc.  and a few noisy toys as well!

  • If you are looking for a CD with classic kids songs, my favorite by far is "Songs for Wiggleworms"

    https://www.amazon.com/Songs-Wiggleworms-Various-Artists/dp/B003HO0RQS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308689457&sr=8-1

It has songs that are sung by adults (and well done) so it doesn't make you want to poke your eyes out.

Other CD's we love are ones by Laurie Berkner and Ralph's World.

Honestly, we mostly rely on our portable DVD player.

  • My kids love the Little People Sing Along cd's: link.  You can find them in the baby section at Target, Walmart, etc.  They have all sorts of themes but the one I linked is their favorite.  We commute to the neighboring city often and it is an hour away.  These cd's keep everyone really happy.  It also during our big road trip as well.

  • We took a road trip at the begining of the summer w/ DD.  I blogged about it before and after, the entries have all my tips and things I learned :)

  • Ds is completely obsessed with the Bare Naked Ladies children's cd called Snack Time. We listen to only it for the 1.25 hr ride to my parents and back every other week. When we go 7 hours to the beach we also take our DVD player.
