Cloth Diaper or Disposables? Clicky

Just curious to see how many people plan to cloth diaper vs. using disposables?  I'm planning on cloth diapering, which has taken everyone in my family by surprise (because it really is unlike me, I'm by far not a "green" person).  I'm more into the cloth diapering thing because it really doesn't seem that much more difficult then disposables and i think they are way cuter plus in the long run the cost savings.

anyways, just curious.  what do you plan on doing?

  • Both!

Disposables when out and about, but mostly cloth at home.

  • disposables most likely b/c daycare will require them anyway, so we wouldn't be able to do full time cloth diapering. I'm considering also doing some cloth during non-daycare hours for environmental reasons.
  • I am planning on CD but will probably keep a stash of disposables in the house for running errands. H is still very hesitant and his family thinks I'm totally nuts, but hopefully it will work out as nicely as I have it in my head.
  • Cloth, but like pp I would probably keep some sposies on hand in case and for longer trips going out.

  • I love the idea of cloth diapering- but for me it would not work out. The amount of laundry that it would take to launder them properly would just not work for me. I am terrible about forgetting things in the wash, letting them sit there, and in general don't start and finish a load at the same time period. Bummer... but props to all you CD ladies.

  • Cloth, and it was DH's idea!  He went to a PT workshop for us to start preparing with DD and he learned that CD-babies tend to PT a lot quicker/easier/etc.  And since we're having a boy and boys also typically take longer to PT we thought it might be a good idea to CD to help it along.

Have you checked with the daycare? All the ones we have looked at so far are fine with cloth, you just have to bring them back home every day, but that's fine with me.

  • I would consider CD'ing if we were planning on having more than one baby.  Disposables are just easier IMHO.  I hate laundry and I really hate smelly laundry.
  • I am planning on doing cloth if I can ever get around to researching what we need for getting started!

  • We use CD for DS during the day and sposies at night. We have saved so much $$$ (we have a high efficiency washer/dryer so there is cost savings with CD). Now that we are having baby #2, we'll be saving more!

  • Combination of both - I have a full set of AIO Cloth Diapers that hasn't gotten much use because my current DC does not CD - however we'll be switching to a different daycare and I already checked if they CD.

  • Cloth for us, though to be honest, we plan on disposables for the first few weeks just until we get a little bit of a "hang" on things before we add yet another new thing in the mix :op

  • I really wish we could do cloth diapers, but we don't have a washer or dryer in our apartment (it's pretty rare around here). Without that, it's not really cheaper, and it isn't necessarily more environmentally friendly to use a CD service. Maybe for the next one...

Check out the FAQ at the top of the Cloth Diapering board.  There are some fantastic links to other sites, blogs, etc. on there.  I was overwhelmed by the abbreviations and types at first, but these helped, and because I am pretty visual, I found learning about the types YouTube's Cloth Diapering 101 very helpful.  GL!

  • These polls are always skewed on the bump. I don't know anyone IRL that cloth diapered. I would guess that in real life no where near 50% cloth diaper. FWIW, my daycare offers a cloth diapering service.

We're in the same boat! I wanted to CD, but without a washer/dryer available to us it just wouldn't work out. Sad

  • We're planning on using disposables for the first 4-6 weeks because we both seriously doubt our ability to handle being first time parents and cloth diapers at the same time.  Then our plan is to switch to cloth.  Our daycare wasn't super jazzed about the idea, but said they would do it.  I think they'll be more into it when they see that we'll be giving them only already stuffed pockets or AIOs.
  • I agree that the polls are skewed.  I started CDing my son when he was three months old, and in two years I can count on one hand the number of other moms I've met who use cloth.  (and we have lived in 4 places in that amount of time)

With this baby I will probably do something similar; use disposables for the first few weeks until the baby is big enough to fit into my one-size pocket diapers.  For us it's all about cost savings, and I've spent about $500 total on cloth diapers and accessories and now have enough for two kids.  I do use disposables on trips or when we have a babysitter, but we have definitely saved money with the cloth.

  • We will use disposables for the first few days, then switch to cloth. I am guessing we will use sposies on trips when we won't have access to a washer/dryer, but otherwise all cloth. I bought a bunch when they were on sale on sites like BabySteals and Totsy, and registerred for a bunch more, so our out of pocket costs for diapers for 2-3 years will be about $500 - much cheaper than disposables!

In the last year, only since KU, I have realized that at least 5 of my co-workers do, and at least 4 of DH's co-workers (or their wives!) do.  BIL and SIL who have an 8 and a 4 year old claim nobody they knew did then.  MIL said one of her male co-workers had been telling them all about his family's recently.
