Hi,
I have a 2 year old son. Right before his first bday he tested positive to a prick test for peanuts. Last week we had the RAST test done for peanuts and tree nuts. Overall, the results were good. No allergy to tree nuts (although we were told to still avoid) and his RAST level for peanuts was.44 or level 1.
I know the RAST only predicts the chance of having a reaction not the severity... My question is anyone know the percentage of a reaction for these numbers?
Re: Peanut Allergy, RAST, and likelihood of reaction
Keep in mind, you will want to repeat the tests to see if they change as your LO gets older. Evidently their immune systems mature at around two years of age so that will probably end up being your bench mark number. What is a level 1 today could be level 4 in a year.
The thing about peanuts in particular is they cause very strong reactions. You just can't know how bad the reaction will be. Strict avoidance and ALWAYS having the epi-pen on hand are absolute necessities.
My twins are 5! My baby is 3!
DS#2 - Allergic to Cashew, Pistachio, Kiwi
DS#3 - Allergic to Milk, Egg, Peanut, Tree Nuts and Sesame
exactly what the pp said.. i just wanted to add something.
Don't let the low numbers fool you. Still avoid peanuts b/c one exposure can mean his levels going up.
