Frozen BM in side by side-how long can I keep it?

I am overflowing my side by side freezer with BM and quickly running out of room. I have just started rotating my stash once a week, but I have milk as old as mid March-is this okay? It smells fine. I guess my question is-What is your rule of thumb regarding frozen BM? 3 months? 6 months or longer? Or do I need to start feeding him the frozen milk so we don't waste?

Re: Frozen BM in side by side-how long can I keep it?

  • our rule has been 3 months for a regular freezer that is opened multiple times a day. our chest freezer which is just for BM, which is colder and opened less frequently, we pretty much save it indefinitely.

if you don't plan on weaning early, i wouldn't bother using frozen stuff just to use it--fresh is more nutritious, and it sounds like you make plenty of milk to give your LO all fresh milk for as long as you're nursing. if you don't want to throw it out, you could check out milk share programs to donate it to someone who needs BM.

  • I kept mine in our regular freezer so we used it within 3 months.. I think you have 6 mths to use it if it is kept in a deep freezer.
  • Yikes-thanks! I will start supplementing his bottles with some frozen BM when I'm at work because I dont want to waste it. Ill prob have to give him about 6 oz of frozen BM a day but I'll just freeze some of the milk I pump at work for future use and be sure to give him fresh milk, too. Bummer-I was thinking i had 6 months :(
