Unswaddling

Is there a time to unswaddle?  I don't think I swaddled Leo for more than a few weeks, but Max loves his swaddle.  Max sleeps so well, I'm terrified to mess with it.  At what point does the swaddle become a problem?

Re: Unswaddling

  • I think our kiddos are just a couple days (maybe a week) apart. At our 4 month pedi appointment she said we should start unswaddling Brynn at night. I had noticed that she was getting free more times that not anyways so I figured it was probably time to.

I think they say to stop around 4 months for some development reason, but I'm not positive. I figured it was time and the pedi suggested it, so thats what we're doing.

  • With Charlotte it just kind of happened naturally, around 4 1/2 - 5 months. We had a really hot night and our AC was broken, seriously it was like 90 degrees in her room. So there was no way I was going to swaddle her. She was busting out most nights anyway. She took to it just fine.

Does he fall asleep without the swaddle? If so, I think you'd be fine since at that age my guess is the swaddle is more for falling asleep than staying asleep.

    Good luck!

  • We were forced to stop at about 6 months when he started rolling over onto his stomach while still swaddled - we were afraid he would get stuck that way. It took a few nights to break the habit.

DD started breaking out of her swaddle consistently around 6.5 months.  It took a few days to get her to stay asleep without it.  We had asked our pedi at her 6 month appointment if it was okay that she needed swaddled in order to sleep.  She was surprised that she still needed it, but said that if that was what she wanted, it was okay to do so.  She never mentioned anything about stopping for developmental reasons.

  • I don't know of any developmental reason why you would need to stop, but as far as safety you are supposed to stop when they can roll over.

When Ava started rolling, she was still sleeping in the swing and couldn't roll over in there anyway, so we continued to swaddle (top half only) until she started to break out of it on her own, which was around 4-5 months.  Lila is still sleeping swaddled at 5 months.  She rolled from back to tummy this weekend, but just like Ava did she is still sleeping in the swing (or the FP rock n play) so I'm not going to unswaddle at the moment.  She sleeps great for the most part, and although she has tried to break out of it a couple times, she isn't doing that consistently.

If he is in a crib and can roll over, you should stop swaddling him, but if that is not the case, I would leave things the way they are since he is sleeping great.

  • I think we kept Brady swaddled past 6 months, because he loved it.  Once he could roll (around 4 months or so), I would unswaddle his arms (or at least one), but left him tightly swaddled on the bottom.  He loved it so much that I didn't want to mess with it.

  • Well I read this earlier and didn't post because Serena was still sleeping swaddled at 5 months but we had to stop that tonight because she rolled onto her face and got stuck!  Thankfully DH heard her muffled cries and now she is sleeping with a thumb in her mouth and on her side.  With DS2 we gradually loosened his swaddle, this time we are going cold turkey.

  • We had been using Halo swaddles, and the package says to stop when LO shows signs of rolling over, breaking loose, or not wanting it.  This often happens at around 3-4 months.  At that point, we switched LO to a regular sleepsack instead.
