I usually get books for most kids' parties. I figure our homes are cluttered enough with toys already. I have a frequent buyer card at a really nice kids' bookstore here, so I can often get pretty deep discounts on the cover price of a new hardback kid's book. I got one hardback recently that retails for $17.99 for $9, plus earned $3 toward another book with that same purchase.
If it's a very close friend's kid, I usually try to get something related to the child's interests and don't worry as much about sticking to a specific cost if I know the kid will really love the item (again, only close friends).
Re: Approx how much do you spend on a child's bday gift?
I try to stick around $20 for kid gifts that aren't super close to us.

I would say $15-$20
