Baby falls out of carseat from cart

https://www.woai.com/content/troubleshooters/story/Car-seats-in-shopping-carts-become-a-dangerous/r8L5T6EXd0mw29A5OjCsaw.cspx

This story was posted on one o my local group facebook. I thought it would be an interesting discussion and has some great info that I had no idea about.

Personally we never carried Raz in his carseat. He hated it and so it stayed in the car. I think another big part of this was that I witnessed a carseat falling off the cart in a parking lot. We usually just wrap Raz so it was never an issue for I us.

But I know many parents have no idea that the carseat is not recommended to be put in the cart. Honestly I never knew that it is not reccomended for children to ever ride in the cart. We see it everyday and it is what is the norm, in fact I have been scolded for having Raz in a back wrap by a mom with a baby in a carseat perched on the hopping cart.It is what we are taught to do I guess...

Maybe the best bet would be to have these warning on the carseat? Or maybe stores should not allow carseats on the cart? But how about those with twins or who babies hate carriers? Opinions?

Re: Baby falls out of carseat from cart

  • I saw this happen at a store this fall. It was heartbreaking.

We did put DS in the cart in the carseat, and I never knew that it wasn't reccomended-- he was always strapped in and the car seat was hooked to the cart. We took him out of it and I wore him when he got bigger.

I think its a great idea to put the warning on the cart or somewhere...

  • I mostly see men doing this. I know DH did it with DD in his SAHD days a few times but he said he always had his hand on her. Most of the time though he would put her in the snap 'n go and pull the cart. I have to look away when I see people with the infant seats on the carts, it just makes me nervous. I would not have been able to do it anyways because I'm so short I would not have been able to see over the cart. I also never carried DD in the bucket  period because it was just too big and awkward and heavy. I loathe buckets and would skip one next time around if we hadn't hung on to DD's.

  • I never put the carseat on the top of the car for two reasons.

One- I never could get it secure enough, it just felt flimsy and dangerous. I figured I was doing something wrong because it seems like everyone else in the store does it. Two- I'm short and with the carseat up there, it blocked my view.

So I have always either worn Linus, or put the carseat in the main basket and just fit my groceries around him. Side note: when I wear him during a grocery trip, it makes it more of a challenge to get the groceries out of the cart when I'm checking out and I always feel like the cashier is staring at me. :-P

  • I have never put the carseat ontop of the cart but I would always put it into the cart.  At places like Walmart where it's just the one basket type of cart I just put the stuff I needed around the carseat or in the childseat area but my grocery store has a two-tiered basket system so I would put the carseat into the top part and the groceries into the bottom.  But literally there was no way the the carseat could fall out or make the cart top heavy or affect the way the cart moved, it was just like having a cart full of stuff!

  • Like PP I have never done this, not only because we never really had a bucket seat but because it just instinctually seems dangerous to me. I wear DD and now mostly take the stroller (I can walk to two grocery stores here, yeah!). Ironically when she was younger I would mostly bring the stroller, DD would get grumpy (she hated her stroller) and I would carry her in the Beco, pushing the stroller full of groceries. Very practical, much easier to maneuver than the cart :-) Sad about the accidents, I hope more people realize and stop doing it.

  • Oh my goodness! We carry our daughter around in her car seat sometimes, but if I do, I always put the seat in the actual grocery cart so there is no chance of her falling off. I usually just carry her around since she'll sleep in my arm while I shop, but I'm thinking of getting a sling now that she's getting bigger and starting to stay awake longer during the day. :)

  • I just about had a heart attack when I saw a woman's shopping cart rolling across a slanted parking lot with an infant seat perched on it as she was chasing it across the lot.  Me and many other people were too far away to do anything just watching with our hands over our mouths.  The cart hit the bumper of a parked truck and tipped over, knocking the seat off the cart and rolled over.  People were on the verge of tears.  The mom ran and swooped up the seat and held it up to show.. no baby inside.  She had apparently already removed the baby whom a relative was holding near her car.  Thank jeebus nothing happened but I was so scared that it makes my skin crawl when I see people balancing the seat on the cart.

I would carry my daughter in the carseat if she were asleep but put it in the basket of the cart and be super careful- I always have one hand on it.  If she were  awake, I would wear her, or if it's a bad back day, push the cart and pull the stroller.  At this point she is good to sit in the cart if need be though I still prefer to wear her.  As to twins and babies who hate carriers.. push cart, pull stroller. It sucks for mama, but it does the job.
