RE: Invitation question - is anyone familiar with 300dpi?

I had someone make my sons invitations on etsy, she emailed me the jpeg & it is 300dpi.  The invitation is for 4x6 invitations.  I'm having them printed on Vista Print.  If I chose 5x7, will they be blurry?  I emailed her, but I haven't heard back yet.....

  • we print advertising at work and we ask that the images being sent to us are at least 300dpi, so I would think they won't be blurry.

  • I don't think they will be blurry, but they may be out of proportion since they were created with 4x6 specifications.  Make sure you check the online proof before printing them!
  • They won't be blurry, but if you go from 4x6 to 5x7, you will lose a little of the design, possibly.  Double check the print preview/crop area.
  • 300dpi means that there are 300 dots per inch of color that makes the picture. Sort of like that part of Ferris Bueller's Day Off when they are in the museum and it zooms in on that one painting until it's nothing but dots. So, the more you enlarge the picture, the bigger the dots get, meaning there are less dots per inch. Going from 4x6 at 300dpi to a 5x7 would put you at probably around 280dpi. Not a huge difference, especially in a print as small as a 5x7. The only thing you might be concerned about is that the proportions aren't the same, so the cropping might be a little off.

  • They won't be blurry but if she designed it at a 4x6 ratio that is what I would print them as.  They will not turn out the same if you go to 5x7 since some will have to be cropped.  Depending on the design that may not matter.
