I was just wondering if you BFed past 1 year, how long did you go and how many times a day did you nurse?
DS is 13 months and I just weaned him down to once a day, right before his nap. He did fine dropping the other feedings and I was ready to drop them too. I'm just not ready to drop this last feeding though, because he might be my last baby and I love the cuddle time. I weaned DD down to one feeding at 13 months too but dropped last feeing after a couple weeks (I was 5 months pg).
I think I want to keep DS' last nursing session there for awhile but I have no plan as to how long.
Re: Extended breastfeeding
We BF'd until 16 mos. I only stopped then because at 13 mos I got pg. Not that I felt I had to wean, I just wanted some "alone time" with my boobies between kiddos.
At 12 mos I nightweaned.
From 12 mos-14 mos he nursed 2-3 times a day and then at bedtime.
At 14-16 mos we went solely to bedtime. I would have continued probably to about 18 mos or a bit longer, but again wanted some "alone time".
The first month (last month) I was glad to be done. Then about 3 weeks in I got very sad and missed it a lot because it was my part of bedtime and solo cuddle time.
Good luck! Enjoy your cuddle time!
#1- 22 months, self weaned- but I was 3 months pg.
#2- at 18 months, down to 2-3 times a day. He loved to nurse but I was growing tired. I had been nursing or pg for 4.5 years straight. Cut him back 1 session a week, and weaned at 19 months so DH and I could go to San Fran.
I miss it!
I nursed on demand until two weeks before his second birthday.
By that time, the only nursing he was doing was before bedtime, and he wasn't even expressing much milk. A couple nights into weaning, he was perfectly fine with not nursing. I think you'll know when he's ready to drop the last feeding.
You know they don't chew breastmilk, right? To each their own, but teeth aren't usually an issue.

Why would you even open the post if the title said Extended Breastfeeding? And I agree with pp who said teeth do not play a factor in breastfeeding.
still going at 5 and almost 3!
very infrequently for the 5 yo, once/maybe twice a day for the "baby"!!!!

Ditto this.
I wasn't going to say anything but I'm going to assume you had biters and didn't just stop BFing for fear they would bite you. I got this comment a lot and I think people just assume a baby with teeth will bite you, but I think in most cases that is false. I have been nibbled a couple times but it was by no means something that would be my sole reason for stopping BFing.
Ari self weaned just before he turned 23 months. He dropped sessions pretty rapidly starting at about 13-14 months. He was down to 2x daily (upon waking & before bed) by 18 months, then down to just a.m. by 20 or 21 months. The last month he would sometimes go a day or 2 without nursing at all. He finally went 5 days w/o & I ate almost an entire large pizza after he went to bed one night (see siggy, lol). He asked to nurse the next morning & I told him "mommy's milk is all gone". I cried but knew it was time & didn't want him getting sick since I'd eaten all that pizza. Plus keeping an extremely restricted diet for nursing a few times a week was getting old - I was going to start pushing him to be done in a few weeks anyway. He talked about mommy's milk being gone about 58696 times that day, but not in a sad way, just a matter of fact way, & he didn't actually ask to nurse again. I think he was processing the whole thing. He mentioned it a few times a day for the next week & then that was it.
So I guess to sum up, you can keep that last session for awhile if you want, & see if he eventually tapers off on his own. If you are ready to be done before he is, you can cross that bridge when you get there.
DD1 I had hoped to BF at least a year, but we weaned suddenly at 8 mos. when I got pg again and was so sick.
With DD2 I made up for it and we nursed for 26 months
. When we quit she was just nursing at nap and bedtime; I think she could have gone forever but I was ready to stop.
