Success after IF

need advice-military/"stranger" related

When I was nearing the end of my pregnancy with H, DH and I decided to sponsor a soldier for a few months.  We sent him 3 different care packages through Jan-March.  We  hadn't heard anything from him, until this past week.  In the past 5 days we received a beautiful letter, he friend-ed me on FB, yesterday he sent my family flowers and today he messaged me on FB thanking us again and asking me if he could keep in touch with our family.  He mentioned again how grateful he was for our support the past few months and how we helped him get through some of the hardest times of his life.

Is this normal?  Or no? I guess the fact that there has been so much correspondence in such a short period of time that is throwing me off a little.  I am not quite sure why I have my guard up-he seems like a really wonderful person.

What do you all think?

Is it similar to the relationship we have here on the boards?

no flames please...

  • I would guess he wasn't able to write back prior (that makes sense to me) and now he can. You can tell by his FB if he's a stand-up guy, I say. Keep it "professional" and get out at any weird signs, just like you would with anyone else on the wide webz!

ps - very sweet thing for you to have done!

  • My DH is military, so I have some background here.  I think this is normal.  Many guys (and ladies) do not have someone back home who cares for them, send them packages ect.  Those little reminders of a "real" world mean everything to these guys.  It gives them hope to come home for a future. I am sure he just so incredible thankful to you.  You may have sent these packages to him when he was in a very low point, and could have changed his world at the time.  I think it is WONDERFUL what you are DH did.  Big Smile

    This!

  • I think it's probably fine, but yes, the warning bells went off for me too.  :)  I think that it's fine because he probably just got the opportunity to respond, and he is probably very grateful for your support.

If he randomly shows up on your doorstep, that would be a little over the line, but I think right now he is just happy to have contact with you.

One of my best memories from elementary school is when we wrote letters to service members in the first Gulf War.  I got a response, and he told me all about the desert and sent me tons of random stuff like sugar packets with Arabic labels, etc.  It was pretty awesome for a 5th grader.  :)

this!  I love that you guys did this :)
  • Thanks ladies!!   Seems like he just wants to be 'friends'--I can't argue with that.  I can't imagine how homesick he must be.  I'll keep using my judgement, though. I feel better now, thanks again!
