What are the favorite nursing bras and tanks?

I was in Destination Maternity yesterday and got sized- I planned to buy them all there but I just couldn't drop $150-$200 on 4 bras without doing more research.  I bought one but I would like a good comfortable bra in each color (black/white/nude), one or two sleep bras, and one or two nursing tanks (I already have a few nursing gowns and tops).  Do you really spend this much on nursing bras?  If there are others out there that you recommend, please let me know.  If it makes a difference, my size is currently 36D and they recommended I go up to a 36E for nursing so I need great support.

I was disappointed to hear in my BF'ing class this past weekend that they do not recommend underwire nursing bras.  Is there really enough support in those without underwire?

How many of each did you buy?

Re: What are the favorite nursing bras and tanks?

  • I just went to Motherhood-they were having a sale buy 3 get one free on bras- and i am kicking myself for only buying two. They were very helpful in fitting me. I am also a 36 D and that is the size they recommended for me after measuring becuase i plan on BFing. I got a very soft supportive bra, and an around the house sports type bra. They were only about $20 each, and after 1 day of wearing the sporty one around the house I wish i bought two more. Hope this helps a bit!

P.S. I bought one underwire nursing bra, and i believe they don't recommend them because the wire can cause blocked ducts, but the one I bought-which is from target, the wire and support is on my ribs, and doesn't even come close to interferring with my milk-filling ducts.

  • I dunno what your preference may be but I bought four racer-back style nursing bras from Sears.  They're Two Hearts Maternity and they were $16 each.  They come in like S,M,L, etc...so I got one black L that I've been wearing during the end of my pregnancy and a black XL and 2 white XLs.  They're sooo comfortable and the support is great, even without the underwire.  I would think the underwire would become very uncomfortbale.  I wasn't looking to break the bank with nursing bras and all that so I opted for these.  I also got a regular nursing bra from a Playtex/Hanes outlet store.  $17.99 wasn't too shabby.  I've not gotten any nursing tanks yet...I figured I could wait on those to see if I really needed them, seeing as I don't believe they're a necessity this early on.  Good luck to you on your hunt!

  • I'd recommend getting a couple of sports nursing bras now, and then go and get "real" nursing bras after your milk has come in and BFing has been well established.

When you do get "real" nursing bras, I highly recommend the HOT MILK brand. They are a little pricey but they are worth every penny. They are SO comfortable - and no underwire (which yes, can caused blocked ducts. ouch)

  • I have these bras and love them.

For nursing tanks I used the Gilligan O'Malley brand at Target.  They don't have padding but worked just fine underneath other tops or as is.

  • With DD I got a couple of tanks and two bras to start off with from Target. Then after a month or two I got two nicer fancier bras. I think one was a Medela that I ended up loving. And one underwire - which I wore twice and regretted terrible because it did cause blocked ducts.

One suggestion I would offer is to not expect to look like you did pre-baby in a nursing bra. Letting go of this expectation will help you find comfortable bras. Your breasts are heavier and just hang a bit lower, not to mention they will look full at times and less full at others.

  • I am a 38D/E. I had several bras, but only ended up wearing one. It was a Bravado one...not the prettiest thing, but it was sooo comfortable. It also provided decent support. I hated all the others. And I definitely recommend no underwire...you're going to be pretty tender at first and they do increase your risk of clogged ducts. I never needed sleep bras and never had any tanks and did just fine. I also didn't leak... I think if you are one that leaks, 3-4 would be good. If you don't, 1-2 is adequate. I also think you should hold off buying a ton of them until after the baby, your milk supply is established (thus aware of a more accurate size) and you're sure you're going to have BFing success.
  • I love You! Lingerie.com (www.you-lingerie.com). They have sexy nursing bras and they aren't expensive as others I seen. I have 3 of them and they are great!
