Eco-Friendly Family

Diaper Decisions

Hello all,

I have been looking into cloth diapering and I am not sure it is something that will fit into our lifestyle right now given our jobs and the amount of travel we do to visit friends/family.

Therefore, I am looking for the most earth friendly diapers and wipes out there that are also good for baby's skin.

I have found products from the following companies:

Whole Foods 365, Earth's Best, Seventh Generation, & BabyGanics.  Any thoughts on one product line vs. the other for wipes and/or diapers.

  • We've used seventh generation a couple times when our trips involved air travel, and they work well for us. They are chlorine free, but I don't really know how they compare to other brands. I think Tushies are the only brand (or maybe there's one other) that don't have the chemical gel stuff.

Honestly, plenty of people do part-time cloth, which might work for you as a middle ground. You could use disposable with day care (though our day care center uses our cloth diapers, so it's not necessarily a deal breaker) and cloth on the nights/weekend, so it would be like one or two loads of laundry a week. It's really no problem if you travel by car and are only usually gone for a weekend or to a place with laundry. We actually even did a plane trip with cloth once when it was a long trip to visit family (they were fine with us washing there). If you're honestly interested in cloth, I wouldn't let the reasons you listed dissuade you. We also used to travel a ton and do so less since DS was born (people come to see us more).

  • 7th Generation seems to be a good company! I would check out their diapers/wipes.

If you do try cloth maybe do part time or when traveling use a cover ( like Sprout Change or Flip) and a disposable insert (Charlie Banana, Flip, Gdiapers, etc)

A lot of people who aren't ready for full time cloth go with a hybrid system. Hope this helps!
