crib set up: side by side or L shape, etc..

Admittedly I fixate about the small stuff sometimes (edit: all the time).

My newest obsession is the twin's bedroom. Please give me any feedback you may have  on practical pros/cons on a side by side vs. L shape lay out for the cribs. Or, if you think it makes no difference, share that too. I didn't know if one orientation was better/worse with regards to babies seeing/playing/bothering each other.

Q2 --Does any one have their crib wholly or partially in front of a window? Has it been a problem or any concerns I should consider (other than strangulation with corded blinds)

Q3 -- If you have valances in your nurseries, do you have anything else under them and what?

THANKS Cool

Re: crib set up: side by side or L shape, etc..

  • At the moment our cribs are in an L shape. In their tiny room it works best.

I don't have their cribs in front of a window and I wouldn't if I could avoid it.

No valances. We have blinds and curtains.

  • We used to have their cribs right next to each other. Once they could stand up and walk around, though, we had to separate their cribs by 8 inches or so (just enough where they couldn't reach into each other's cribs).

Re: the window, I would think one concern would be a potential temperature difference between the two cribs if you had leaky or poorly-insulated windows (can you tell I live in a 1950s house with original windows? lol).

  • Our cribs are parallel and a little over five feet apart (against opposite walls) with a window in between them. We have plantation shutters, and have already had to move the changing table from beneath it because both girls loved to play with the shutters while getting changed.

They're both standing in their cribs and "talking" to each other across the room. At this point there is no position that would prevent that, LOL!

ETA: Here's a link to some pictures. This is where the dresser/changing table was originally; we had to swap it with the bookcase when the girls were about six months old. https://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/my-room/my-room-marlowe-amp-brigid-lake-worth-fl-135789

  • I was going to do L shape but the way our room is setup we ended up putting the cribs on opposite walls. Its a small room so its not like they are too far away (and they still share the same crib at the moment)

One of our cribs is right next to the window and when they start getting a little older we'll make sure the cords are a little better secured and out of the way.

We have valances on our windows and just have blinds on the windows under the valances. I recently added a blackout liner to help keep the light out better during the day.

I actually had both DDs in the same crib until they were about 7 months or so.  When we set up the second crib, I can't remember what we did in the beginning, but what I eventually did was put one crib in the corner of the room (short side on one wall and long side on the other) and then put the other crib right beside it (short side on wall, long side against the other crib).  It worked great for a small room because I was able to still keep a double bed up in their room which could double as a changing area.  I would just put DDs in on the short end of the crib and they were mobile enough to be able to lie down or get up to where I was.  If it was too difficult, I could just move the outside crib out and get to the inner one (if one DD decided she didn't want to get up :-)  They didn't really bug each other and we kept their cribs this way until we converted them to toddler beds.

Sorry, no help for questions 2 or 3.

  • I only have one crib, but have everything layer out in my head....hahahaa! Cribs will be in an L shape. Neither crib will be in front of a window. I will hang a valance and nothing else. Are we on the same page?

  • We have ours in an L-shape. The girls love it. We put them down happy and they play together. Since they're able to reach each other, they'll hold hands and bounce or will hand a lovey back & forth or will tickle each other. They do this for 5-10 minutes and then lay down and go to sleep. It works for us and it's so sweet to watch them interact like this.

We don't have a crib near the window. My concerns would be light, noise, a draft.

We have a valance on the window with standard blinds and nothing else.

  • Here is a pic of our nursery.  One crib is partial against a window.  When we set up up as an L the one crib blocked like half of the other crib so we just lined them up like this.

  • Glad I'm not the only one wondering what the best crib layout is. We don't even have all our furniture yet and I'm planning. I made scale drawings of both spare bedrooms and current or planned furniture pieces to determine which bedroom to make the nursery and how to place the cribs and other furniture to make sure everything will fit without any heavy lifting.

  • Yay! this is one of the configurations I was trying to visualize in my head today, which was hard with only one crib set up. My "in the box" thinking was giving me a hard time about not pushing them both against the walls. Thanks!

Also... thanks to those who mentioned only one crib at first. It's helped me come up with a configuration that will allow us to start with one and then add in another.

I knew I came to the right place to help me think this through!

Exactly the same here.....we had a few different models drawn out just in case we measured wrong at the store.  Our measuring tape was out for weeks until the cribs and dresser/changing table arrived.  We have the cribs in an L shape with about 3 feet of space between them (and no windows on those walls). We put our love seat in front of the window bc it is an original window from the 1800s, so a little drafty and very thin glass.

  • Their cribs were in an L shape, but that was the only layout that worked for us.  I didn't want them in front of windows, they would definitely get into trouble eventually there!
  • Our cribs are in a L formation but there is a door separating them.  We have sleigh cribs so they would have looked silly side by side.  I wouldn't put a crib in front of a window- for safey reasons and temperature concerns.  As far as window treatments- we have roman shades but I think I'm going to try something new come fall.
