SBR: Rec an organizational website/book/whatever

Just to give ya'll some context, I am not a hoarder.  I'm one of those people who gives things away pretty frequently.  Got it from my dad.  About twice a year, I go through this phase of "this clutter is driving me crazy and I need to get rid of it".  I feel it happening again.  I'm not saying it is bad to purge every once in a while, but I think my other problem is that I don't have good organizational skills at home.  Do y'all have recs of good books/websites/tips on organizing your home?  For right now, the kitchen is our first priority, as I feel like it is about to explode with all the crap we have in it.  Then our bedroom, then the office.

Thanks,

Amy

  • No recs, but just wanted to say that I could have written this post myself, and I'm anxious to see some of the ideas and advice offered.  Thanks for posting!

  • I'm dealing with the same issues. It doesn't help that our house is small and there's baby cr@p EVERYWHERE. Additionally, both DH and myself have our own businesses - him film, me photography so the gear is taking over our house. I'm constantly drowning in laundry and junk mail and never have enough time to deal with it. I've decided that I just need to move so that I can start over and unpack one box at a time and put things in proper homes rather than anywhere they fit. I have made this the year of de-cluttering and trying to simplify my life which I know will lessen the stress that I'm constantly dealing with as a result.

Here's a site that I have bookmarked - https://www.simplify101.com/ - she offers organization/de-clutter classes and has a decent blog too. RealSimple has a lot of useful info as well, and I'm also finding great ideas on Pinterest lately too. I have an organization folder here - https://pinterest.com/taliwildman/organize-me/ . Good luck! Please share any tips or other resources that you find!

I get a lot of my organizational ideas from Pinterest these days.

ETA: Real Simple has a lot of good ideas too.

How could I forget about Real Simple?  I subscribe to Real Simple. Brainfart.

Thanks for the tip on Pinterest.

  • Can either of y'all invite me to Pinterest?  It looks like there's a waiting list of some sort.

  • I agree with Rosie that a lot of ideas can be found on pinterest. I also want to add that bins and baskets are awesome at making a space feel and look organized. In my pantry all my baking stuff is in a plastic bin, all the small items like seasoning packets, bags of pasta basically anythign that is not a box in another bin. In the playroom everything goes in two rolling carts under the kids play table. All toys have to fit in the carts or on top of the table or we start purging. All the art supplies are in rolling carts, the wii controls and accessories are in bin from Target. In the bathroom I have baskets under the sink that are divided into four different categories. Even in my closet I have all extra sheets, purses, etc... in coordinating bins. I don't have any bins for the kids upper closets and it looks so messy. I hope eventually be able to get big baskets and bins for their stuff.

Ditto! We even have a gift certificate for an hour with a professional organizer that I've been too unorganized/lazy to call!
