Success after IF

pedi will start LO on antibiotics if my pertussis test is positive

thanks to those of you who suggested LO could start antibiotics even if he isn't showing signs of pertussis. i talked to the pedi who said that for now, while we're waiting on my pertussis test results, he doesn't see a need to treat DS. he says that the fact that he's had three of the five DTAPs and is almost nine months old puts him in a pretty good place in terms of immunity. however, he says that if the pertussis test is positive we will give him antibiotics to be on the safe side.

we won't get the pertussis results for a few days and i wish we could just give him antibiotics now, but i feel a little better knowing that our pedi isn't too worried. thanks to all of you for your words of support!

  • Oh no...I hope you both are OK! Feel better.

  • That sounds like a good plan and that your LO is well protected.  Now you can concentrate on getting yourself well!  Take care mama!

  • I'm crossing my fingers that it isn't pertussis, but am glad the pedi is ready to take action if/when you are sure.  Hang in there (also hope that now that you are dx you can begin to feel better quickly - I know it's been a rough week already!)

I hope it doesn't come to this and that you are diagnosed with something more minor! (((hugs)))
  • We all just got over the whooping cough ourselves.  Totally rotten.  DS was not fully immunized at 2 months, so he of course got it.  They never tested me for it (I got sick first).  But since we were watching him carefully for symptoms, we had him in the doctor's office right away.  He was tested on Thursday and on Saturday the pedi called us to tell us it was positive.  She was going to prescribe antibiotics for all of us if we hadn't all already started them.

If your interested, here was the series of events at my house...

I got sick (low grade fever, lack of energy, general crappiness, coughing of course... to the point of almost throwing up or passing out, couldn't make it up the stairs without losing my breath, running nose, etc) on Fri 5/27 (started with the tickle in the back of the throat), went to the doctor Tues 5/31 - sent for chest xray (positive for pneumonia), got on antibiotics.  Baby started showing symptoms late Wednesday 6/1, at the pedi's on 6/2 first thing, put on antibiotics because of how I was sick.  tested him for pertussis "just in case".  DH started showing symptoms 6/2 was at the doctors Fri 6/3- put on antibiotics too.  Saturday, Baby's pertussis test came back positive.

Baby's symptoms sucked.  Scary 10 minute hacking fits, runny nose, wheezy.  His hacking fits were mostly triggered from laying down to sitting up.  So every morning for about 3 days he would cough and cough and cough.  Thank god he never turned blue.  We'd have two-three fits a day with minor hacking in between.

    Hope you feel better soon.
