Tips for traveling with a 15 m.o.

So as I've mentioned in a previous post, we're taking a trip to Indiana next month. DD will be 15 m.o. and will probably be walking by then. As it is, she doesn't sit still for long, so the flights should be interesting... She's traveling as a lap baby, and DH and MIL will be with us so we'll be able to pass her around, but I'm starting to dread the trip... I'm looking for suggestions for new things to get her to keep her busy. Lots of snacks of course, I'll load up the iPad with anything kid friendly, and I'm buying a magnadoodle as she seemed to really like one at a friend's house over the weekend. What else?

Re: Tips for traveling with a 15 m.o.

  • Magna doodle and a DVD player were our saving graces. She hadn't really ever watched tv before, so she was very interested in that. We had a baby Einstein farm animals DVD that she loved--lots of animals and puppet shows.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Loading the player...
  • DD loves elmo so we put an episode or two that she hadn't seen before on the ipad. We also put several kid friendly games on the ipad. We bought a travel magnadoodle and it was a big hit. I also bought her a small book of elmo stickers that went over really well. Snacks worked and so did a cup of ice that the flight attendant recommended. That kept her entertained for almost 30 minutes. DD also loves to read so I brought a few new lift the flap books.

  • Sounds like you have most of it covered.

Does she like to be read to? Some books?

I know this probably sounds like a dumb question, but do you have shoes for her? If she'll be walking by then, you might want to get some if you don't already have some (we didn't get shoes for our boys until they started walking).

Also, we got some kid-geared headphones. Do you have kids music on the iPad?

Neither of our boys sit still for very long either and we had to take a 4-hour flight and a 10-hour flight with both of them when DS2 was that age and while I was really nervous about it, the flights went fine overall. It's all about distraction and hoping that your fellow passengers are kind and have patience. Big Smile

Good luck and hope you have a great trip!

  • An iPod Touch with some of DD's favorite shows and kid-friendly games, stickers, books and snacks have always worked for us.  We try not take a ton of things because that gets to be too much to carry and keep track of in addition to DD.  We've also used window clings (something like this) and they were a hit.  Also, keep in mind your DD may end up sleeping for most of the flight.  We have always been very pleasantly surprised at how much DD will just sleep on the flight.  That also definitely helps make the trip easier! :)

  • Also wanted to add that I'd download fruit ninja for your ipad stat!  DS loves to swipe at the fruit.
