Breastfeeding

need to start supplementing at 10 months....

so DD has only had breastmilk up until this point (is is almost 10 months), however, i have been pulling approx. 12 oz daily from my freezer stash daily, so it is quickly running out!  she takes approx. 24oz while i am at work.

So, my question is, how did you start supplementing?  did you mix the BM with the formuls, or just do straight formula.  i only pump about 10-12 oz a day (from 4 pumping sessions).

thanks!

Re: need to start supplementing at 10 months....

  • Just a question - do you nurse at home, too?  And how long are you away from LO every day?  For a regular 8-10 hour work day, 24 oz. seems like a lot?  What is she doing for solids?  I'm just wondering if you really need to supplement as much as you think?

All of this!  24 oz is approx the recommended daily amount; this for just during the workday seems like a lot.

Maybe talk to your daycare to see if they are wasting any of your liquid gold?  Also, is LO getting enough solids during the day while you are at work?

  • yup like PPs said that sounds like a really good amount of milk your LO is getting.  DD is now 11 months old but I had to start supplementing with formula last month but I was REALLY not getting any milk.  You said you're getting like 12 oz or more a day from 4 pumping sessions I think? That's still a LOT of milk!

How many oz are you leaving LO with while at work? DD was eating a lot of solids by 10 months and basically just taking two 4 or 5 oz bottles while I was at work.  Then I BF the rest of the time.  Since I was pumping and only getting maybe 2 oz TOTAL in the day I started supplementing.

Anyway it really sounds like you still have plenty of milk so hopefully you won't have to supplement! Good luck!  And just for comparison I think DD is getting about 15 oz of BM/formula day now because she's eating so many solids and eating plenty of yogurt and cheese.

  • thanks for the respones!!

I am gone from DD 10 hours a day, and i nurse her once in the AM, and 1-2x at night.  i mentioned at her 9 month appointment that she was taking in 24oz while i was at work (because i thought it was a little excessive), but the pedi said anything between 24-32oz a day was normal, and by 12 months she should wean herself down to 16oz a day (because of increased food intake).  she implied that 24oz was fine. she is eating 3 meals a day, and four 6oz bottles.

hmmm...ok, question: how many bottles do you give daily? and how many ounces?  maybe i should lessen the milk intake and increase the food???

thanks!  i REALLY appreciate your answers!!!!!!

  • My 6 month old is right in the middle for height and weight, but has taken 30-42oz a day since 1 month, and generally the higher end of that scale. I EP so I can actually track this pretty effectively. She does lose some to reflux (pedi confirmed and ok'd the amount - this is not just overfeeding). Some babies just eat more.

I'm only gone for 7hrs per day, but at that age my DS was taking 2 - 5.5oz bottles, so for 10 hrs I would think 3 - 6oz would be plenty.  Your pedi should take into account that you are nursing 2-3x per day into the 24-32oz calculation.

My DD goes to daycare for about 7-7.5 hours a day and she only drinks about 6 ounces total (2 x 3oz bottles).  The max she ever took was 12 ounces and that was around 5 months.  She also nurses 3-4 times a day (more on the weekends).

She does eat a good amount of solids (3 meals a day and usually 1 or 2 snacks).

I think you need to up the amount of solids.  It's not like on his birthday he is magically going to drink less milk.  Maybe he needs a little push?

  • DD is 9 months and weighs just over 17 pounds.  I nurse her first thing in the morning and before bed, and usually once when I get home from work (so basically 2-2.5 nursing sessions per day).  She gets 15 oz. at day care - usually she finishes the bottles but not always.  She also has three meals of solids. This seems to work well for us - HTH!

  • How much solids does she eat? Maybe she's not getting enough solids while you're at work and therefore drinking so much BM.

  • To answer your ACTUAL question: do not mix breast milk with formula. Formula goes bad faster than breastmilk and you don't want to waste any breastmilk. Put them in separate bottles.
