For a twin bed with bed rail, how do you sit & read to your kid?

We're planning to switch DD from a toddler bed to a twin bed soon, but I'm curious how you navigate the bed rail if you read to your kid at night? Do you just sit in a chair beside the bed? Or do you get a hideaway rail, and just put it up after stories are done? I'm wondering if that would jostle her enough to keep her from falling asleep (it's nice if she's close to sleep when I leave the room). Help!

  • We went from a crib to a twin bed and now get into bed with DS to read. We do have a hideaway rail, It is so much more comfortable to just snuggle in bed!

  • We have an armless chair in DD1's room, and we sit there together to read books. When she was younger, we always sat in the glider in the nursery to read her books, so it was natural for us to have a chair for reading books in her big girl room too.

  • I just lay in bed with her. There's still plenty of room, even with the "extra long" rail we have. I was fine doing it at 9 months pregnant and I never had an issue jostling her too much but her mattress is very firm.

  • Depends....sometimes we will just climb in bed with her and other times we put the rail away (hideaway) and kneel next to the bed as we read.

  • Usually in the glider.

But... I climb in and out of their beds to snuggle before sleep all the time.

I enter from the bottom instead of the side. (picture bed with 1 rail up and the other side of the bed flush to the wall).

They're not asleep when I'm climbing out tho.  Not sure how that would work.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • sometimes we read in her glider. sometimes I lay in the bed with her and i just scoot off the end of the bed - we have a rail that folds down but we leave it up all the time.

we sit at the end of the bed or on the floor.  Or when the grandparents are visiting, he climbs into Oma's bed and she reads to him there.
