I assumed that DS's temp last night was from teething, it was at 102 then with tylenol it went down to 100. We kept it around 100 to 101 until this morning it spiked to 103, a little bit ago. He usually doesn't wake up this early (usually it's around 11-1130am) and has been whinning/crying off and on all night.
I plan on calling for a dr. appt. at 8 when they open, but since DS has never ran a temp like this before I thought I would ask all of you.
He also seems to be having some drainage causing a cough, but he's had a runny nose and such for a few weeks due to allergies.
I'm really leaning more toward an ear infection, but he's never had one before so I really don't know what to expect. From your all's experience, what usually causes 103 temp and could if be solely from teething or is it more of an infection sorta thing?
TIA.

i would think ear infection as well, especially since lo has had a cold.
eta: just saw you said allergies. but whenevr dd has a lot of drainage she will inevitably end up with an ear infection.
I was thinking its kinda high for teething too. He's not necessarily tugging on his ear as much as he is rubbing his ears (like he rubs his eyes when he's tired) but he does this when he's tired to. So I don't know if its due to ear infection or just tiredness. He's very lethargic and is just wanting to be cuddled so I know he has to feel awful since he never lets me do that. Thanks for posting, and I hope I can get him in today too! And yes, childhood illnesses like these are so irritating, unpredictable, and just plain mean.
It's kinda high for a teething fever, but not unheard of. How is LO acting otherwise? What makes you think it's an ear infection? Ear pulling? Crying when laying flat?
My LO spiked a 104 fever out of nowhere yesterday, and if I didn't physically touch him I would have never known. He was acting completely normal...running, laughing, playing, eating. I didn't give him Motrin until right before bed, but I'm in he school of that a fever is fighting something off so I try not to treat it unless he's uncomfortable or complaining.
He slept all night, and woke up in a great mood. But he still has a 102ish fever. We'll play it by ear today as far as medicating, and hope it's just a virus passing through.
I hope your LO feels better soon!
He has mainly had milk. He hasn't really wanted to eat anything but like yogurt or jello mainly because his gums are so swollen. He still uses a bottle and hasn't wanted any other fluid but milk. I've tried juice, water, pedialyte and he won't take it.
He has been "rubbing" his ears a lot lately, but also if I try to touch them he gets a little upset or turns his head away. He hasn't cried while laying flat but he's been so lethargic that he took 4 naps yesterday, and one was for 4 hours.
He has been really whinny, woke up a few times last night crying. He hasn't really wanted to take any food, just milk. He woke up screaming at 6am (usually wakes up at 11-11:30am) and I cuddled and rocked him back to sleep, which is another unusual thing. I know he feels awful, he looks like he feels awful.
I plan on it, thanks for your input. I'm not automatically assuming its an EI, just seems the most probably right now. He's never had one before, and this is the first time he's really acted like this. Even when he had croup at 6 months and RSV/pneumonia at 9 months he wasn't this sickly....
DS had croup at 6 months, but hasn't had the flu ever. He had also gotten RSV/pneumonia at 9 months, but he still crawled around and played. This is the first time he's ever really had a temp spike this high. And he's so sickly that he doesn't really want to move or do anything but sleep.
Thank you! He's sleeping again, but seems to be improving. We just got home from the dr and they said it was a virus. She also said after the fever he may get a rash all over his body that will disappear quickly. She never said what it was, but sounds like what your describing so that may be the case. She also said there is fluid behind his TM (ear drum) but no redness or s/sx of infection. And that the fluid is likely due to allergies, drainage, and teething. She said to give him some benadryl to help dry it up, but he doesn't do well with it so I'm debating on whether to just let him be. (it usually hypes him up).
