Books or sites for making baby food?

At our 4 month appointment the pedi said we can start with cereal and if he likes it start introducing other baby foods.  I know other foods won't be for a while, but I would like to make my own and don't know the first thing about it, so I want to get reading - any suggestions??

  • The website www.wholesomebabyfood.com has great ideas and recipes.

  • Ditto to the above and www.weelicious.com

  • I used the Super Baby food and website (https://www.superbabyfood.com/) and found it pretty easy to follow (and do).  I actually didn't give her any jarred/processed foods until she began finger foods.

  • If you are old fashioned like me and like having a cookbook as well, we have the Williams Sonoma baby food cookbook and Petite Appetite.  Both have a lot of toddler friendly recipes as well.
  • Thanks!!  I guess what I'm most wondering about so far is that I read adding meats is a really good idea if you BF so they get Iron and Zinc...but I have no idea how to puree a meat (like do I just boil it first? are there certain kinds of meat that are best?, etc.) Of course this is down the road...

  • Meat is a hard introduction, many little kids do not like it pureed.  My DD never did.  Once she could eat little pieces, she gobbled it up.  Don't forget all commercial baby cereals are iron fortified so your LO can get their iron from there as well.
  • I used the Super Baby Food book and wholesomebabyfood. com.  I usually baked chicken first before pureeing it.  Honestly, even though DD1 was exculsively BF, I didn't do meats until much later when she could really chew - might have even been close to a year.  We didn't start solids until 6 months and I gave her a lot of greens (spinach and kale) and egg yolk for iron and protein before giving her meat.  I also made my baby oatmeal, though she didn't really eat much cereal unless it was mixed with a fruit or veg.  Her first foods were avocado and sweet potato followed by 4 or 5 other vegs before we started cereal. I was super careful about her diet because she was soy/dairy intolerant and I found there was still a lot to feed her without meat and dairy.  Until a year old food is really just for practice - to teach how to swallow, gum, etc.  The major source of nutrients should still come from BM or formula.  Good luck!  I love making baby food for my bebes.

Honestly pureed meat just grossed me out so much that I waited until she could chew/gnaw on meat and was older... Stick out tongue

sprout would only eat pureed meat if it was in something smooth...like sweet potatoes or carrots.  I'd cook the meat (usually pulling off however I made it for us: poached, roasted, whatever) & then blend.

Dark leafy greens also have iron, FWIW.  And, frozen things like peas & green beans pureed a lot better if you boiled them first (so, not just defrosting & then puree).

I highly recommend making big batches, putting in ice cube trays, freezing & then placing in labelled bags (we had veggie, meat, starch & fruit bags).

  • thanks for the extra tips!
