Food Allergy

Formula/suspected dairy allergy--questions!

My DS is 6.5 months old. For the first 6 months of his life I EBFed him. I myself am top-8 free due to being allergic to all of those things, so he was never exposed to milk, soy, etc. even through breastmilk. Unfortunately, my limited diet was causing supply issues for me and weight gain issues for him. It was decided that it would be best if we introduced formula to him.

He's been on formula since he was 6 months and 3 days (so a few weeks?). At first it was 50/50 formula and EBM, then 75/25, and now it's about 90/10 (formula/BM). When we first started transitioning he had constipation problems. We pulled all solid foods from his diet to help his tummy adjust. Then he started going poop every 3 days, and lately is going multiple times a day. It's always hard and involves a lot of straining, though. when I change him, his poop is not watery, I don't see blood or mucus, etc. but his anus is always red (which could obviously be just from pooping). He also has acid reflux and that seems to be more aggravated since switching to formula. Being that food allergies run in the family, I interpret EVERYTHING as a possibly sign of food allergies. So with that being said,

I guess my questions are if your LO showed a dairy allergy when given formula, what was their symptoms? Did you suspect a dairy allergy immediately, or did you try changing formulas and then figure out it might be dairy? (We started on Good Start, then moved to Good Start Protect [which has helped him have more frequent BMs], am wondering now if we should try another formula.) Did you have allergy testing done on your LO before switching to a different (non-dairy) formula?

  • My daughter had projectile vomiting and an all-over body rash. I ebf'd at the time (she was three months) but had an alcoholic drink so I gave her formula one time. She also pooped a ton (at least 8 times a day) from my dairy intake. Since you have such a strong history of allergies, I wonder if you could get him tested? He could have s mild allergy.

  • My LO had explosive poops and hives all over his body when I introduced milk based formula at around nine weeks.

  • we introduced milk based formula at 10 months.  he was already covered in head to toe eczema prior to the formula but immediately after drinking a bottle he projectile vomited and the rash got even worse (redder and had more bumps).  Our apt. with the allergist was already scheduled at that point but we switched to soy formula that same day- we didn't want to risk a stronger reaction.

  • As soon as we found out he had an allergy to milk we changed to alimentum (he only got one bottle of formula a night) and that worked well for him.  When he was switched to formula at night we already were aware of some of his allergies so no cows milk.

we tested our son when he was 8 months old -after an ana reaction.

I recently asked my allergist if she does testing on babies who don't have sings of allergies (i'm pregnant) but there is family history and she said only after they turn 6 months old.  So perhaps get your LO tested?  But also some kids show up negative to some allergens until they are exposed to them couple of times.

At least you are ahead of the game and have some experiences with allergies and know what to look for.

  • Runny green poops with blood were our tell-tale sign.
