Moms of older toddlers/preschoolers

What kind of thermometer do you use on your kids?  Logan has a fever and would not let me take him temp orally (or even rectally--yes I got desparate and tried).  Are the ear thermometers acurate at all? If so, can you recommend one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?  TIA!

ETA:  I didn't use the same thermometer when I tried rectally.  Just wanted to clear that up. Smile

  • I have always done underarm with both kids.

  • We have a Braun Thermoscan ear thermometer. That's the only way Jack lets us take his. He won't let me do under his arm, or under the tongue, so ears it is. I think it's fairly accurate, so far. There's mixed reviews on them, though. I haven't been able to test the accuracy (ie, use the ear thermometer, and then take rectally), but when he's felt warm and been sick, it registers his temperature as a fever. Does that make sense?

  • We have the Braun ear thermometer as well.  I know my LO isn't as old, but it is super easy.  The longest it ever took for us was still around 2 seconds.  I've compared it to our mouth digital, and it was spot on.  I might still have a coupon for $5 off if you're interested (which of course I found when I got home from buying it).

  • We also have an ear thermometer, and my mom uses a temporal one.  Both have detected when she's had a fever and felt warm.
  • I use the temporal one, and also a digital one under the arm -- add a degree.  When Alex was running his 4 day fever, the doc was wanting the underarm # only, even though it was the same as the temporal.

  • Fin isn't as old as Logan - but we've have good luck with doing under the arm. I had heard that it was a degree or two different than rectal, but whenever we've done both - it's been the same.

We use a temporal one.  DH and I prefer that one too, so we've found it a very helpful thermometer!
  • We use the temporal scanner.  It's quick and has always been accurate compared to other ones we tried.

  • We have the Exergen temporal thermometer, it has worked well for us.
