Abby still has a "fever" :(

I told y'all a few weeks ago about Abby's 2-3 week low grade fever. We did 10 days of "just in case" Amoxicillian. She had a slightly runny nose and Sinus infections run in our family. Still had a fever so we went back. We started her on Augmentin Friday after getting a bunch of blood drawn. Her CBC looked fine (ie: not Leukemia, my worst fear). I'm to call them in the morning with her status. She's 100.5 right now.

After this, she sees an endocrinlogist to rule out any disorder that would cause her to have an inability to maintain a "normal" body temp. After that, she'll be labeled as "one of those kids". Of which, our pedi says there are all of 3 in their practice and two of them are siblings.

One of my primary concerns is what happens if she gets really sick. She's always been the kid that gets 104+ fevers. She once spiked 105.8 which freaked even me out :( I wonder/worry that she'll add 6-7 degrees to her now seemingly normal hyperthermic temp and go into a coma. I just don't like not knowing, you know??

  • Still having the fever sucks, but I'm so glad to hear that all of the blood work was fine!  Yay for normal bloodwork.  :)

As for the really high fevers.  In my completely uninformed opinion, wouldn't she be fine then?  I mean, it would be freaky high, but it would still just be 6 degrees above her normal.  Maybe her body would react the same way that anyone else would to 104*?  Does that even make sense?

  • Tons of dust coming your way! I am sure that they will find out what's wrong, if anything.

My son had febrile seizures so I always took extra precautions anytime that he got a fever to make sure that I could keep his temperature under control as much as possible. Would that work for when her temperature elevates so that you could prevent it from going too high??

  • All good questions.

Normal or not, there are certain temps that cause destruction at a cellular level. It comes down to chemistry at that point and it's just not good to be above 106, no matter the reason.

I am excellent with fever control. I'm well educated on maximum dosages of both Motrin and Tylenol, down to the mg/kg (I have an excel spreadsheet calculator!). It's the first wave of the sickness that I'm afraid I'll miss. If she spikes a fever at preschool or at night etc. Once I know she's sick, it's not unusual for her to keep 101 while on both Motrin and Tylenol at the same time given at timed intervals (not alternating mind you, both, full strength).

  • Could she have just had a virus?  Jakob ran a fever for three weeks when he had mono.
