Sickness and Ferber

So, my little guy was sick this weekend- a little cold and cough. Because he was so ill, he slept in our arms for naps and our bed for the night. He seems to have already picked up on those bad habits and although he has not had a fever for 2 days, continues to fuss when we put him down for naps until we pick him up. Last night, he was up every half hour, until we put him in bed with us. We had planned on trying Ferber this weekend and clearly that was scrapped. At this point, I am so exhausted, I can't see straight. What say ye, 3-6- should I attempt to Ferber him- checking and reassuring at regular intervals? Can I start with naps or is it best to start only at night? I'm really so tired, I just need someone to give me a plan! Thanks in advance!

Re: Sickness and Ferber

  • Sorry you had a sick guy this weekend hope he feels better soon.  I am no good on the Ferber thoughts, because I dont plan on doing that.

  • Maybe he's still not feeling well. I'm no help on the Ferber thing as I don't plan on CIO.

  • How was he sleeping before he got sick? Maybe he just needs some more time to get back on track.  We did ferber with DS, but he was 11 months.... not sure how well it would work at 4 mo... it would probably work, but I don't think I would be able to handle it that young.  When we did it with DS we did it for night and naps all at once- it took 3 days, and the first was the worst. Have you read the book? If not, I highly recommend reading it before you start anything- it lays it all out nicely.  I know the exhausted feeling for sure though- hang in there!

  • That's the thing- he was a crappy sleeper before he got sick, but at least would sleep in his crib (after long periods of rocking). The long rocking, I can handle. I cannot handle waking up 30 minutes after I have rocked him for an hour (all. night. long.). I cannot handle him sleeping in our bed all night. I just can't we haven't ever co slept and I don't really want to get into that habit now. That's why we had planned on doing sleep training this weekend- and, no, we never ever planned on doing straight up CIO- we were going to use the intervals listed in the book (which we have both read).

  • that is really rough:( our DS was just like that, and it got really really bad to the point where we would take shifts of holding him in the rocker all night long. we would have done ferber sooner but his crib was in our room, and we were in the process of moving, and long story, but we waited. it's worth a try! if it works, you will be a very happy momma:) i know once it was all over i wished i had done it sooner because it was amazing. the crying is really tough, but it may be the only thing that will work for you (it was for us).
