Baby Showers

Holy hell, people I have to ask

Is this the  first time in your life you have gotten a gift?  I mean seriously.  I have received tons and tons of bath items like  body wash and lotion in my life, but every year I don't go around to all my friends and family and try to think of a "cute" way of telling them I don't need any more lotion.  I smile politely, say thank you and send a card.  If I can use it, I do and if I don't, I donate it to a woman's shelter.

Getting gifts that you don't need, like, or  whatever is a part of life.  I would think that you have experienced this phenomenon at least once before in your life.  Just because you are growing a human being doesn't mean you suddenly have a right to tell people what to give you.  Now if they ask, sure you can tell them what you want or need, but if not just be polite.

Dear Lord, I pray that Christmas, birthday and housewarming registries don't become popular.

Target has that covered... wedding registry, baby registry, gift list. You know, so you can tell people what to buy you for every gift giving occasion. /sarcasm

Speak for yourself! I totally send my entire family a list every birthday/holiday to make sure that they buy me what I actually need and not just some random piece of junk. The idea of me getting a cute outfit instead just makes me shutter! Stick out tongue

All joking aside though, the sense of entitlement that people have is shocking. It has never been and will NEVER be your family/friends responsibility to buy the items you need for YOUR baby.

As a teacher, I have received so many gifts (how many candles does one person need ) that I couldn't use, but I still showed my appreciation and wrote the students TYs.

  • Totally agree. I think any gift should be appreciated as long as it's not offensive (example: in high school, my friend got an Atkins diet book from her grandmother. Apparently, her grandmother thought she was too fat and told her to get crackin').

lol, I meant to mention in my post that I was inspired by yours, but L was having a fit and I forgot.  I was building on yours with pictures and far more harsh language.

  • No problem.  I guess I had my fill of dumb posts today.  There was another topic about shy people opening gifts in front of people and tried really hard to be nice, but it still got to me.

I am actually from missouri and it truly does put things into perspective when you see people who lost everything and others are complaining  that they have too many pink dresses.  Like they think all their guests conspired against them or something.  The gift givers saw a cute dress and thought their future DD would look nice in it.  What is the harm in that?

I've got family down in Mo and when I was down at our reunion, the amount of grassroots collections really impressed me.  If I would have thought about it, I'd have brought L's stuff down, but we had local church drives too, so it still got there.  Between the flooding to the east and the tornadoes on the west, Mo got hit hard.

  • It truly has been amazing to see how much people care.  My husband works at a big box store and they had a donation drive for Joplin and they were overwhelmed with the generosity that the customers and employees showed.
  • The funny thing is... I have a friend that returned from Joplin a week or two ago.  He went there to help.  He said that what the people need there the most is cash.  They are over-run with donations of clothing and other "stuff".

Oh, my bad.  They should take everything back to the store and get credit so  they can buy their $30 monkey-shaped rug for the nursery then.  The gist is still there.  There are countless of disasters, charities and shelters that can use the donations.  Right now Joplin needs cash so they can start rebuilding buildings, but the fact is there are people out there who need these items that people so obviously don't want.

  • I'm new at this baby registry thing, so spare me. I put necessities on my registry because my mom, MIL and grandmas like to buy me the necessities. For example, nursery furniture, stroller, etc. I put non-necessary items like a bottle warmer or a pacifier thermometer for people who don't want to spend a lot but want to give a cute gift. Heck, I'd accept anything I get, and put it to use somehow.  I was never raised to be a snob over gifts I've received. Yeah, you're pregnant, but that doesn't give you the right to become a raging hormonal basketcase over shower gifts or receiving used baby items. I teach at a school where some of the kids live in rotating foster care, shelters and incredibly unfit homes, the best thing you could ever give your child is a loving home. Just saying.

Now I'm getting off my soapbox.

It's a good idea in theory, but it's not very accurate (at least that I've found).  It's a regular looking paci that has thermometer sensors in it.  My big problem, however, is when L was sick enough to be running a fever, he didn't want to keep it in his mouth for long (and, at least ours, takes awhile to finally get to the temp).

Ok, I feel like a moron, with all the crap out there like wipe warmers I was thinking it was something that measured the temp of the pacifier, which seemed ridiculous... my dumb moment of the day!
