Are you friends with your parents on Facebook

My mom keeps trying to friend me. I keep telling her no because she is not my friend but my mother. Our relationship is not a good one. I know she only wants to see pix of ds. I told her she needs to buy a cell phone with a camera so I can send her pix that way. Grr. What to do

Re: Are you friends with your parents on Facebook

  • No.

My mother tried to use a computer at the local library once, got confused and went home and never tried again.   No danger of her ever figuring out FB.

  • Yes, but my dad sat on the phone with me setting his security settings. He actually had it all figured out, but he needed to see if he was missing anything. He uses it to enter contests and see pics of the kids and that's it. He got annoyed at only having the links to the photo albums sent out. My mom isn't bothered at all, can't see the point. She just lurks on my dad's!

My IL's don't FB, but they also live 10 minutes away so they think it's redundant (although MIL says she should, all her family is in England). They see the pics we take anyway. DH's grandparents are on FB, as are most of his family overseas. FB is how we keep in touch, Skype also. DH's grandma is 81 today, and an avid FB and Skype user. I also don't post anything I wouldn't want my young cousins or DH's grandma seeing anyway, that's what PM is for.

If my relationship with any of my family, parents or otherwise, was not good, I'd either not friend them (and I don't for some family!), or put them on limited profile. Instead of friending your mom or texting pics (which are hard to see anyway), just email the link to whatever photo album you want to share, much easier.

  • of course! I don't see why you wouldn't. Now, if I was in college, I certainly wouldn't want her knowing what I've been up to, but I certainly have nothing to hide anymore. And if you really don't want to be that involved with your mom, it's a great way to feel connected without having to really do anything.

  • My parents are not on it, but I am friends with my 21 y.o. That is why I got on Facebook a few years back - I wanted to monitor her activities and decided to try to befriend her. Surprisingly she accepted. She thinks I can't see her pictures but I do see all of them! Sometimes I wish I didn't...

  • Yep, I have a great relationship with my mom and she's just fine with computers.  I don't tend to get too personal on there anyway, though.

I'm FB friends with my mom, but I don't think my dad even knows what FB is.
  • My parents aren't on Facebook.  My dad couldn't remember what it was called and called it "facelift".  I about fell over.

My aunt tried to friend me, but I didn't respond. She tends to be rather nosy, and I didn't think my comings and goings were any of her business.

  • My parents are both on Facebook, but rarely check it.  My dad is more computer savvy than my mom (she is pretty green and often asks me to "go on the Internet" to buy stuff for her), but, surprisingly, it's my mom who is on FB more often.  Her BFF is on all the time and tells my mom when I've posted new pics of LO.

I was pleasantly surprised this evening to see that 1) my mom used the chat feature to say hi to me and 2) texted me a smiley emoticon.  I didn't know she'd gotten so fluent!

I mostly use FB to post and view pics of family and friends, so it's no big deal to me if the 'rents are on there.  I already have to watch what I post because a number of people from work (including my supervisor and a couple of other higher-ups) are friends with me.

  • No, my dad is very good with computers but Facebook is definitely not his thing and my mom passed away 18 years ago.
