I did request one on my registry. I used it allllll of the time. We traveled quite a bit with DD, and she stayed with my mom several times, so the pnp came in handy. I swear by the pack n play for when you are visiting friends and family-- they are awesome!
I registered for, and received a PNP, that has a bassinet feature too. We are going to use it for the first couple of weeks as the baby's bed, and have it in our bedroom, and then after that we'll either have it set up in the family room, or the basement, whichever seems to get more use... it'll be a trial and error thing. Also, we wanted a PNP in case we needed it for travel, since we do have some family that lives out of state, or if we are going somewhere and know that they wont have a place for him to sleep in.
We registered for it. We will use it when visiting family and friends for the day or overnight. It will be great for naps. And we also will probably use the basinet feature in our bedroom right when she is born.
We have the evenflo mini suite. It's a little smaller than a pnp. We originally got it because we moved when Ben was 5 weeks old and didn't want to have to put together a crib twice. We've used it for travelling and that's worked great. I might use it for him to play in outside so I can get some raking/yardwork done (we live in tx so it's still pretty warm).
I am definitly requesting one, probably a pack and play. We might use it instead of the crib for the first nights at home, so baby can be in our room, and I am positive that it will be great for travel, and for visiting other people houses - both for naps and sleeping and also to play at places that are not child-proof.
we reg'd for it even though i felt we wouldn't use it. but everyone kept saying we "needed" it. It's still in the box. now i figure i'll use it next year in the backyard during bbqs & at the beach.?
We were given one that was practically brand new. It doesn't have the bassinet feature though. It might be a tight squeeze fitting it into our bedroom, so we're debating about buying a separate bassinet. I'd rather just have him sleep in the crib from the beginning, but I'm not sure if that's practical or not!
I'd say it's a must have. We had one w/ the bassinet/changing table combo....and used it for 3 months before moving DD to her crib. After that, we used just the play yard part ALL THE TIME. We took it everywhere, and it was so easy to move it from room to room to keep DD contained when she started crawling. We ended up buying a smaller version as well to take on trips. Even if you don't need one w/ a bassinet, you will need the PnP part.
We registered for a pack and play that has the built-in basinet. Baby will be sleeping in it in our room at first, and we will also be using it for travel to grandparents' houses. Once he outgrows the basinet, we'll remove that part and use it just as a playpen/play yard.

We got one and plan on using it all the time. I think its the coolest thing. ours vibrates, plays music, has a bed for the baby to sleep, a changing station thing and travels easily.
We got the Chicco discovery PNP and love it. We use it for her to sleep in our bedroom for these first few months, and every day we roll it out to the living room for naps, the changing station, and the activity bar/music/vibrations. Couldn't do without it. We'll also use it for travel.
Re: Play yards
Oh! Pack n play?
Use it ALL.THE.TIME! Best purchase ever!
It helps that both of your moms have a crib. Do you hang out with friends often enough that you'll need a place to put the baby to sleep?
Because we traveled a ton, it was great for us, but I can see how it wouldnt be necessary for everyone- it might not be for you.
We have ours set up in our living room. we use it as a changing station, a safe place to put the baby and she also naps in it. I LOVE ours
We also have a bassinet in the bedroom next to the bed
