Programmable thermostat settings?

If you use one, what do you keep it set at?  I was reading that the recommended summer setting when you are home is 78 during the day and 81 at night.  I have a 2 story house that is single zone and the upstairs is dramatically warmer.  If I kept my thermostat between 78-81, it would easily be 83-86 upstairs.  Before kids, I wouldn't worry about it, but DS is home all day and still naps in his crib. I think it would be way too warm for him to nap if the temp was in the mid-80s!  I've been keeping our set at 68 at night and 72-74 during the day, but compared to those recommendations, I feel like we are wasting energy.

Re: Programmable thermostat settings?

  • We don't have air so this probably isn't as useful, but in the winter ours is at:

66 when we're home (weekend days, weekday afternoon and eve)
    63 while we're at work
58-60 at night (all the heat rises so the upstairs is quite a bit warmer and can actually get too warm if it runs more often)

  • During the day we keep the thermostat at 83, at night we keep it between 78-80. We are in the desert and it is 110-120 degrees outside during the day and still in the 90s - 100s at night.

In the winter, we keep the thermostat around 69-72.

81-84 in the day, 81 or 82 at night. We live in a very hot climate, "feels like temps" have been in the 115s lately.

ETA: I tried to up the temp a little as a money-saving experiment, but have determined that life is not worth living at 85* while you're trying to sleep. For some reason, having the a/c on 85 is so much more miserable than just turning the dammn thing off and opening the windows.

  • OMG, I definitely should be turning our thermo up!
  • Right now I am home all day so we leave it at 75 all the time.  We only turn it on if it is really hot or muggy out though, right now it is at 77. We live in a very humid area so if there is no breeze the air is more likely to be on. During the winter we set it at 68 during the day and 62 at night.

  • 68 when home in the day (summer)

    70 at night (summer)

68-72 when home in day  (winter) depending on how we feel

  • We have a toddler and 2 older folks in the house. Our a/c is set to 77 day/night in the summer. Yesterday mom wasn't feeling well so we put it at 74 and my dad kept turning it back up.

In the winter if we turn the heater on its 68 I think?
