Is it too early to start planning our Jan 2012 Disneyland vaca? We're rolling it into a family reunion and my grandparents 60th anniversary celebration and I need to start figuring out pricing and dates, etc.
Does anyone have hotel recommendations? What about airfaire and/or packages? Where is the best place to look online?
Thank you!!
Re: Disneyland vacation recs
How fancy do you want to go?
We stay at the Peacock Suites, it's NOT fancy. but it's cheap, and clean and we like it - it's also walkable without being right on the strip - plus it's next to a bunch of resturants (We went to Bumba Gumps)
Easter 2011
Its never too early to start! And I am very jealous that you are going! If you are going to look at packages I would check disney.com and Costco. You can also check places like Expedia, Travelocity, etc. but I think you are better off going direct to Disney or Costco. When we have planned trips in the past we usually book seperately and have saved some money that way. One of the blogs I follow has a bunch of ways to save on buying park passes.
We used to stay at Howard Johnson which is within walking distance to the park. We liked it because it's close and has food places close by so we didn't always have to eat in the park. Last time we went we stayed at Sheraton Anaheim Hotel and LOVED it! It was great because it is still close to the park but they have a shuttle that runs all day which is nice to save your feet for walking around the park. The package we booked also included breakfast every day at their breakfast buffet. That saved us another $15 a day per person.
HTH! Have fun planning!
We stayed at The Annabella in a family suite. Had a queen in the main room, bunk beds in another small room and tv and day bed in another. It was great to have a room for each kid. My only complaint was there was no table/chairs so we picniced on the floor when we were eating in room. It had had hard wood floors which was nice since we were sitting on them, and Walker was on the floor. It is walking distance to downtown disney, 5 min, then about 5 more to the main gate.
Costco seems to have good packages, but all the rooms were for basic, not family suites, and the upgrade didnt seem like a good price when we were looking. We ended up booking through AAA.
Don't forget to do a Character Breakfast, we did it at Paradise Pier, kids loved it!
Ohhh fun! we have stayed at the Carousel Inn & Suites, and the Best Western Park Place Inn. Both are across the street.

I say it's never to early to start planning!
My criteria for a family vacation hotel is free breakfast at the hotel. I think it saves $$ and it's easy to run down to breakfast and go back to the room to prep for the day.
When we went with just Audrey 2 years ago, we stayed at the Staybridge suites. (it's a holiday inn family hotel and was free on my points) It had a full kitchen, not that we cooked at all, the full fridge was nice and microwave popcorn at night.
The first stop we made was the grocery store to stock up on milk, bottled water, pop, snacks etc. We brought a bunch of small snackies, but the larger items we bought there. We had brought a cooler which we brought into the park each day with us. We never had to buy any drinks, we had lunch for Aud and snacks for all of us. It was GREAT!
Our room had 1 bedroom and living room. They had DVD's you could borrow from the lobby so after she was in bed, we stayed up and watched a movie. Now, with 2 kids though, I would look into the prices of a 2 bedroom suite.
I was just in Anaheim week before last for 6 days for work. (we did go to Disneyland one night) We stayed at the Embassy Suites and it was great! Free breakfast in the am including custom omlettes. THEN, in the evening for 2 hours they had free pizza, popcorn, snack mix and FREE ADULT BEVERAGES! (kid drinks too) They may have other food too, but I only saw the pizza. My company has alot of heavy drinkers and this cut down on bar tabs considerably! Granted they were pretty weak, but hey FREE! Mixed drinks, beer and wine.
I had a 1 bedroom suite. Only a mini fridge and microwave though.
I told my co-workers, I would defenintely stay there again with my family!
I don't know about packages, since I piece meal it together with my points.
We stayed at the Candy Cane Inn. It is on the same side of the street as Disney and is walkable to the main entrance. They also run shuttles every 30 minutes. The rooms are small, but we weren't in them very much, so it didn't matter. There was a mini fridge in the room. They also had free breakfast. When they found out we were there for Luke's bday, they sent up a bunch of chocolate chip cookies, a balloon and a card.
The pool was nice and sheltered, not big, but not crowded.

Passes: no personal recs. But I've heard good things about Costco
My .002 - the first time we went we tried to cram everything into three days. When we go again, we're going to get a two-day pass, take a day off and then another two-day pass. Also, we did a lot more at the original park than we did at the California adventure. With the original park, it seems like there's more crammed into the space, so you ge more for you walking distance. The Labrea Bakery was a life saver for regular food. Granted I was pregnant at the time, but their iced tea was spool good. If there is even an inkling that you or your kids will get sucked into buying expensive things at the gift shop, get them off of eBay. Anything from batches of Disney Pins for trading with the staff (we had the most fun with that) to costumes...get them at way cheaper price before you actually go if you know what things you guys will be into.
