another bbq question - potluck

My mom is having a family bbq for 4th of July.  She created an event on Facebook and invited everyone that way.  On the page, she asked that everyone bring a dish and BYOB.

Now she's wants to know what everyone will bring.  I say leave it, don't nag people since they may not even know yet.  If we end up with 5 potato salads, well then we'll eat a lot of potato salad!

So WDYD?  Do you ask people to let you know what they are bringing?  Or just wait till the day of and see what happens?

Re: another bbq question - potluck

  • If most people are like me they won't know what they are bringing until the last minute.  And even if they are planning on bringing something, it could change at the last minute.  So I say leave it the way it is.  I think people will feel more relaxed and comfortable if they can just figure it out when they figure it out and show up with whatever they put together.  Ya know?

I tell people what to bring. I'm pushy and controlling like that.  But if I didn't tell them what to bring, I would ask them what type of food they are planning (side dish, dessert, fruit, veggie, whatevs). There's no way I could leave my entire spread to the mercy of my friends and family (whom I love dearly).  Tact be damned.

This. At the very least, I would want to make sure we were covered w/ sides, desert, fruit/veg.

Honestly, if I showed up w/ a potato salad and 10 other people did the same, it would be difficult for me to have the "Oh, well, I love potato salad for dinner" mentality.  We went out and spent money to make enough to share (as did the 9 other families) and now we're all left w/ a shitton of potato salad that no one is going to eat and we'll likely have it until the 9th of July at which point the rest would be thrown out b/c it's spoiled.

I'd rather have the heads up that potato salad (or whatev) is being provided and my (rather delicious) strawberry pie w/ a pecan shortbread crust would be appreciated and eaten.

    Recipe now. Please and thanks.

No kidding!  That or I'm going to plan a potluck just so I can get you to bring that over.  :)

I would ask, too and do it publicly on the wall of the invitation, so everybody can see what is already being brought. I'd much rather bring a dessert, if I knew that 5 others are making sides already.

  • we've asked that you put the category on your reply and change it to what you are bringing once you know for sure.

    so usually it looks like

    smiths: side dish

    jones: side dish

    johnsons: dessert

etc. and then they can change later to potato salad, beans, urban's delicious pie

    :)
