Coming out of hiding with Newbie questions!

Hello folks... some of you may remember me as "aj_wed" once upon a time. Well, I am back, remarried and with a new Nestie name. So, I am KIND OF a Newbie, but not really. However, I am new to this board as an active TTC-er!

I have questions about where to start!! My best friend gave me an Ovulation Wheel that she used to determine her ovulation window and it worked for both of her kids. I feel like it is a little simplistic so I am guessing there have to be other ways.

Can you recommend good ovulation prediction kits? Websites with good resources, etc? Good beginners info?

Thanks!

Ditto PP - Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a must read. It will answer all your questions and then some (without being overwhelming).

  •  I would recommend using these:

    https://www.amazon.com/First-Response-Daily-Ovulation-Test/dp/B00177HBAW

we tried for 2-3 months trying to figure it out on our own, used all the tricks to predicting your fertility and it didn't work. If your serious about getting pregnant this test will tell you the exact day that you are ovulating. Just pee on the stick everyday 1 line means your not ovulating and when you see 2 lines your ovulating! ts very easy. Worked on the first try! I can't figure out why people go months and months getting frustrated when they can just make it easy.

Ditto PP... TCOYF is SO great.  Then FertilityFriend.com is what I actually used to keep track of everything.  It was way easier than I thought it would be and actually pretty interesting when you get a few cycles under your belt and can start to analyze what's going on.  I was really surprised how much my cycles varied and what all that info actually means to your fertility.  Pretty cool stuff.  And we never would have gotten our timing right if it wasn't for charting.

ETA: When we were actively TTC, I used the cheapie OPK test strips you can get from amazon.com (or saveontests.com) and they worked well when I did at least two a day.  They were pretty darn cheap so I didn't feel guilty about using up a bunch of them and I had a few long cycles where I definitely went through quite a few at a time.  You just have to know that it's not a positive until it's as dark or darker than the control line and you want to go with the first time you get that positive.

Those tests don't work for everyone.  And, sometimes your surge window is very short and if you test only once a day at the same time, you could miss it.  Also, it's not as easy as one line/two lines.  I'm glad that it was easy for you and that those tests helped you on the first try.

The CBEFM that I mentioned above is a deal where you POAS every morning when you wake up, stick it in the machine, and it tells you peak, high, low, etc.  I loved it.  I'm not sure how it's different from these sticks chemistry-wise, but I do know that I had the same experience as HSArtteach with OPKs - huge wast of money for me.

The monitor tests for different things.  You can use your fmu on the monitor, but it is not rec's for opks.  If I could afford the monitor, I would try it.

  • I remember you! Welcome back and congrats on your marriage. We are TTC #1 (currently on first Clomid cycle) and TCOYF helped me understand so much. I also chart with FF.

  • Hello! Welcome back!

Most women don't need too much to get PG. The Ovulation Wheel can give you the basic dates to TTC and the vast majority of the time, that's all you need. Save you a bunch of agonizing over temps and getting up close and personal with your cervical mucous ;). The book TCYOF is awesome though for understanding those dates and how the whole getting pregnant thing actually works. Forget health class! More than half of what was in the book wasn't explained well in nursing school!!

  • I can't promise that will will work for you but it certainly is worth trying. My OB is the one that recommended trying it and she was PG also and she used it. Good luck!!

Thanks everyone! We will work with the wheel and basic charting for now and see how it goes. I am 36, so I know that plays a factor into all of this, so I just want to be on top of it.

I will also order TCOYF today!

    Thanks!
