Carrying a 16 month old for traveling?

DH and I started talking about our big move in late August/early September and I am wondering how I will deal with transporting DD. My first question is: How easy is it to carry a 16 month old in a SSC or a wrap? So far we have done well, last plane trip I carried her no problem in my wrap (front carries) and I went out on short trips with her. She is 20 pounds now, I guess she will be around 24 pounds in August.

Our situation is a bit insane, we moving back to Europe (Sweden) and are sending most of our stuff ahead. But we are going to New York to see some friends 'on the way' for about 6 days. Then I am going to see my family for another week before finally getting to our destination. So I want to travel really light. DH does not want to travel with our fairly light and foldable stroller (Bugaboo Bee) and think we need an umbrella stroller. I like that DD can sleep in the Bugaboo stroller because it lies flat but then again DD doesn't really like sleeping in it and she doesn't do long naps there. DH wants us to buy and umbrella stroller for travel, so we can take it through security but I don't really see the advantages over our fairly light stroller. Anybody have experiences with that?

So my crazy ambition is now to simply just carry her. Is that insane? We did 2 weeks with just that when she was 10 months but I guess that was different. Part of my journey will be by myself so I would hope to be able to drag my suitcase and push the stroller by myself. (btw, we will not be bringing a car seat since we will not need one)

  • I would probably get an umbrella stroller in your case. While I preferred to wear my ds at this age, I think you are doing a lot and a stroller may come in handy.Even if you wear her and push the stroller w/x bag in it, at least you have the option.

  • Are you bringing the car seat for the plane ride?  You could buy the go go baby wheels.  They are awesome.  I traveled alone with DS without a stroller.  And my Boba was awesome in the plane for tight places and carrying lots of things.

  • Hmmm, well, when I took DD to Cuba at 22 months, I only took the Ergo, no stroller. We were fine, and I had to lug a suitcase and a car seat (with a gogoKidz wheels attachment) through all airports- JFK, Miami & Havana. I can't remember how heavy she was then, but she was 29 lbs. at her 2-year check up 2 months later.

If your question is merely airport travel, a carrier is fine. What part do you think you need the umbrella stroller for- New York? If so, I can certainly lend you one while you're here. We have a spare we picked up earlier this year.

Wow, if you carried her at almost 29 lbs, that might be okay then. We mainly need it for travel and then the 2 x 6 days in NY and Copenhagen. I can probably borrow something in Copenhagen so I might take you up on that offer then about the umbrella stroller :-)

  • We traveled when DD was 14 months old with just an Ergo.  She was 23-24 lbs and not walking at the time.  The only time we could've used a stroller was at Sea World (she got heavy, so DH and I took turns), but otherwise, it was nice not having to negotiate the stroller, luggage and 4 y/o DS.

You do not want to be carrying your kid around for weeks in New York or the airport with all of your crap. Bring a stroller.

Thanks, that is good to know. I will be traveling mostly with DH (except for the last week but I can probably borrow a stroller of some sort) so we could take turns.

  • I am not anti-stroller, but I never travel with a stroller.  My DS is almost 30 lbs. at 14 months and I still would rather carry him through airports and on vacation than bother with a stroller.

On our last trip we borrowed a stroller at our destination and it still wasn't that useful.

  • when i travel by myself through an airport, i like to have a stroller to lug my stuff around and then i wear DS.

but its definitely not needed, esp if you travel light.

I found the opposite to be true.  I did NOT want my hands occupied with a stroller in the aiport.  DD has flown 8 times & it was a life-saver to have her in a carrier.  Four times we traveled w/DH and 4 times we traveled w/just the two of us us.

Having her in a carrier meant that I could wheel my luggage and dig in my purse for my identification, tickets, etc.  Also, if push came to shove, I could put my luggage in a luggage cart.

One of the airports I frequent has these hand luggage carts with babyseats in. DD is big enough for it now and I always put her in, she loves it! (see picture) Last time when my flight was 2 hours delayed it was a life saver just being able to trawl the rolling pavements with her in it for entertainment. I just don't want to rely on these carts.

I don't understand. I'm sorry I clear.  I didn't mean to suggest that you should rely on getting a cart for your LO.

I was responding to a PP who said that using a carrier seemed to be a hassle.  My experience was that using a carrier was a great help.

I think you would be fine.  Sophia is 10 months and 25 lbs, and I still carry her for long periods at a time.  I can even still do a good hour in a RS, so with a wrap or my ergo it would be nice and comfy.  But I have no experience carrying a toddler, would she want down all the time?

I understood that :-) I was partly responding to previous poster too, I just want to make sure I can carry her if I go without stroller/possibility of luggage cart. I am really happy that so many people, including you, have reassured me that I will be fine even with a 25 lbs toddler :-)
