Food Allergy

Great News!

DD (4 years old) is allergic to egg.  Discovered that twin DS's (10mo old) were allergic to dairy when they were 6mo old.  Introduced egg to twins last week.  DS1 was okay.  DS2 had little patches of red (but has had these before) on his cheeks while eating.  I left nanny in charge while I went to get groceries.  She reported that he developed redness and swelling a  half hour later around his mouth, cheeks, under chin and his hands where he had touched the egg.  He was scratching at those areas and was fussy.  By the time I got home, he was better.  The only other things at that meal were whole wheat bread and banana (both of which he's had multiple times before).  I was so upset to think he was allergic to egg as well.

I emailed our allergist who suggested that since it was a mild reaction, to rechallenge him in a few days with small tastes every 15 minutes until he had a reaction or until he ate a substantial amount.  I was skeptical, but we tried yesterday and DS2 didn't react!!!! He loves egg and ate a whole egg yesterday without any problem.  I am so glad that we have a great allergist.

Re: Great News!

  • that's great. congrats.

Do you guys keep eggs in the house with your first child allergic? how do you keep it away from a possible CC or exposure?

I don't know if i would be able to give my second child eggs. Since DS1 is severely allergic to eggs, we don't even keep it in the house. I can't imagine us giving it to my second child (I'm pregnant).. we probably still keep it out of the house.

  • We do keep eggs in the house although we tend only to eat when DD is sleeping or at her grandma's.  It is pretty easy to avoid cross contamination.  I actually wanted to expose the boys to eggs early on and will keep feeding it to them regularly.  If they are kept away from it and because they have allergic tendencies, there is a greater chance that they will develop an allergy to it with avoiding it.  I want their lives to be as normal as possible, so we will only keep things away if they are allergic to it.  None of my kids have had anaphylaxis, so that might change my opinion if they did.

yup.  My DH and i said this couple of days ago.  We wonder if we would be this "crazy" if we never witnessed our son go into an ana shock. We probably would be a little more relaxed. But rushing your lifeless child's body to the ER changed so much for us.  I'm sure anyone who witnessed their child go into shock can say the same - it completely changes you.

I totally get what you're saying and i hope my second child is not allergic and we probably will have special times to give him that type of food. I guess i'm also turned off by some of these products (milk and eggs in particular) so i'm actually planning on never keeping it in the house, even if my son outgrows this allergy.

  • Well that is good news! I hope it keeps going well!

I am undecided about how to handle the egg situation with our DD.  DS had eggs once and projectile vomited repeatedly and then passed out.  We didn't realize it was a serious allergic reaction.  Since then his levels have gotten much worse.  I have cooked something with eggs once in the last year probably and we do not keep them in the house.  I know the research is mixed on exposure.  I honestly can't figure out how to give it to DD and not expose DS.  As it is, I only plan to give her very few dairy products (which he is also allergic to).   I am "angry" with eggs I guess you could say.  And very, very afraid of them.
