question about thumb sucking...

My daughter has started to suck her thumb.  I try to pull it out and give her a pasifier when I see her do this, but two seconds later it is right back in.  I had no idea they started this so young.  Does anyone have any ideas how to deter her from this?

  • Other than pulling it out, there really isn't a great way.

I honestly wish my kid would suck her thumb! You don't have to put the pacifier back in 8 times a night, a thumb doesn't get lost in the supermarket or dropped on dirty floors.

And for anyone that says "but you can take the pacifier away, and it is so much harder to stop a thumb sucker later in life," I say HA!  I have a 2 year old hooked on his binky and it is NOT easy to stop!!

If that is the way your DD wants to self soothe, it is ok. It is nature's pacifier (in addition to the boob of course!)

  • Yeah, I actually kind of wish my LO would suck her thumb.  She refuses to take the paci and has no way to self soothe.  She has started to suck on her fingers a bit in the last few days and that's totally fine with me!

  • My Mom and MIL are having fits because I'm not trying to stop DD from sucking on her fingers.  The only problem I have is when she tries to stick her whole fist in her mouth and starts gagging herself, but that doesn't happen very often.  It's so much easier to get her to sleep now that she found her thumb!
