Food Allergy

Intro - Dairy and Soy free

I just found out 2 days ago that my 4 week old son is allergic to dairy and soy. As soon as we figured it out I started my dairy/soy free diet. I'm not concerned about going dairy free as I've done a vegan diet in the past, but soy is going to be difficult!

Just a few questions for anyone in the same boat who chose to BF: 1. How long did it take to notice a change in your child? (as far as fussiness/discomfort from the allergy while it was getting out of your body)

2. How long did it take to find out if there were additional allergies?

I have to bring his stool samples to the pediatrician 1 week and 2 weeks after beginning the diet to see if there is still microscopic blood in his poop, and I'm just hoping that the diet is working and that there aren't additional allergies that are causing his issues

Re: Intro - Dairy and Soy free

  • 1. How long did it take to notice a change in your child?  about 2 weeks for his skin to clear up and his poop to be normal. He had really bad eczema that blistered and had to wear socks on his hands for the first 8 months so he doesn't rip his eyes out.  I was a vegetarian and also have been a vegan in the past so it wasn't soo bad.

    2. How long did it take to find out if there were additional allergies? when he had blood work done.  The soy came out negative from the pricking test but during the blood test (a few weeks later), it came out positive. .

    Good luck.

  • DS had poop in his stool at about 10 days old. I went dairy/soy free immediately. His poop was better around the 5th day. It hasn't been to bad. I'm a cheese fanatic, but I've managed just fine. This board has been awesome, and I've lost a ton of weight lol. Quite honestly I think I'll stick to this diet long after I'm done breastfeeding. I feel great, and I just think it'll be easier to deal with LO allergies when he's eating solids.

  • for my first son- my elimination diets didn't work- I never found the right combo of foods for him and after we finally got his dx we switched to formula because my supply also tanked at the same time.  with this kiddo- his skin has cleared considerably within the first week of elminating dairy and eggs.  He still has really dry skin but it doesn't seem to bother him too much- if it doesn't get any worse we'll wait until his allergist apt. this fall to pull more things from my diet.  if his skin gets worse I'll start pulling more foods.

  • I don't have a lot of advice, as I suffered with a soy allergy since an infant and was only (finally) diagnosed recently as an adult!  Soy is a pain to avoid, so I feel for you.  As for me, I noticed an immediate improvement once I strictly eliminated any soy from my diet.  Best of luck for you and your little one.
